This is book 64, and was sent to us, iirc, by WHSmith in support of our 100book challenge.
It’s a preteen novel, and the plot line brought to mind Homecoming by Cynthia Voigt, which is one of my favourite pre teen books. As such, I swiped this one from Big’s tbr pile, and took it with me to the leisure centre the other day during her rookie lifeguard test. Turned out that for once the baby needed sleep while we were there, so I got to read it pretty much through.
I was glad I read it rather than Big. I think she might have been somewhat upset at the ending. Not to put in spoilers, but we’re not talking happy ever after here, so if your child is likely to be adversely affected by that, you might want to pre read. There is violence and real life, although it reads slightly remotely somehow – or perhaps that’s because the narrator is a boy and I always find it slightly more difficult to completely identify with male leads in that way.
I did enjoy it though. And I think overall I’d recommend it. Though not above Homecoming
, which really is a cut above.
