Saving money on a science-y Saturday.

Started the day by saving £15 a month for the next year 🙂 I’d ordered a new O2 sim through TopCashBack who were offering £100 on 12 month sim only deals for that week. It finally arrived so I rang up to get a PAC from T-mobile, who instead offered me a £5 a month tariff that suits my needs admirably. Even with the £100 back, I’d have been paying £140 for the year instead of £60, so it didn’t take much calculation to work out that staying put was a better choice. The sim is now in an envelope waiting to go back to O2 via the post office tomorrow 🙂

I also did a revolutionary thing. I turned the computer off. It was surprisingly hard work to keep it turned off, it’s amazing how many things I do online. Check recipes, look things up, keep an eye on the news, keep in touch with friends and acquaintances via twitter, brightkite and blogs…but after the stress of Friday, I decided some downtime was in order.

Instead I read a book. The Thrift Book: Live Well and Spend Less to be precise. It was pretty good, although not having the netbook on to follow all the links on offer was kind of annoying. It’s also re-inspired me to get back to work on the rest of this website, having a fab domain like liveotherwise and doing nothing but a blog on it is a bit pathetic 😉

I may review the book further in another post if I get chance, but I want to get on with the rest of the day first 🙂

Trying to tidy the room up I found an odd plastic bag and asked what it was. Turned out it was the cover for the microscope we bought at Christmas, and mention of it was enough to inspire the kids to get it out. It’s a rather nifty bit of kit that hooks up to the pc, so not only did they investigate various items (pre-prepared slides were fly leg, onion skin, pine wood and something else that I forget) like hairs, wool, paper and so on, but they also saved a number of images for use making their own cards later on. Science is art is science. And on a weekend too, how debauched are we?

Evening crept up on me all too fast – probably partly because after playing outside for a while they sat and watched Lilo And Stitch and I did too 😉 – so I put together some tea and suddenly it was their bedtime. Should have been my bedtime too, but I let the night get away from me and before I knew it, it was 1 am. One disturbed night later and here we are again.

  1. Well done for getting some unplugged time.
I liked that thrift book when I read it but I knew a lot of what was suggested already and a lot of the links were out of date when I checked them.
