Edited 02/03/09 – as the article has now reappeared, I’m removing the full text, if you want to read it all, go to the Times.

There was briefly an article by Philip Pullman in the times, but it seems to have gone. Following in the footsteps of many other blogs, I’d like to share it here, with full attribution to the author.

Philip Pullman

The image of this nation that haunts me most powerfully is that of the sleeping giant Albion in William Blake’s prophetic books. Sleep, profound and inveterate slumber: that is the condition of Britain today.
