as blogged elsewhere, (lovely piccies Sarah!) we domed 😉

It worked really well – for those who didn’t catch this last time, we used instructions that I found online. Couple of adaptations though – wouldn’t roll the newspaper around dowel or whatever, you need it as tight as you can get it. We tended to roll three sheets together to get more strength. And Ros, that had better be a big pile of newspapers – we ran out! Someone (don’t know her name) went out and accosted someone in their garden and came back with the contents of their recycling bag 🙂 Adaptation 2 Sarah already mentioned – we made cones with cereal box cardboard and reinforced the points of the pentagon. We build the dome as 6 pentagons each formed with longer tubes round the side and shorter ones within. Then you just need 5 children to hold them up as they are being strapped together.

Decided afterwards that if we’d made similar strengthener plates for the joints between the pentagons we’d have had difficulties taking the dome down. Ah well, next time 😉

So that took up a goodly part of the day. Can’t for the life of me remember what we did when we got home, think Big watched some documentary and listened to her horrible history cd. She’s very happy with that. More chess with Tim while I yoyo-ed up and down the stairs with Small.

  1. Thought I just wrote a comment but it seems to have got lost. Was just wondering what you stuck the dome together with? did you use tons of tape?
And I have a fab picture of a geodesic dome which I saw in Spain – will just put it on my blog.

  2. Yup, pretty much just tons of tape. Although if we’d used cardboard on the rest of the joints we’d have got away with lots less.
    Fantastic piccie – that’s a magnificent dome.

  3. ooo I remember doing something like this when I was at school. Completely forgotten about it. Thanks for jogging my memory 🙂
