When Christmas planning goes wrong

Way back in the summer, I won £60 Tesco vouchers in a twitter party. I’ve been saving them for Christmas shopping. I’d have gone and spent them last week, but I was busy being ill, along with all the kids. So today, I finally went.

And it turned out that only one of the two vouchers was validated. So I only had £10 to spend, instead of £60.

Now, given that I managed to scrape the side of the car a couple weeks ago, and that bill has come to £300, I’ve been trying for a *very* frugal Christmas. Most of what I’ve got is from vouchers, competitions and from stashing what I’ve saved on cashback sites through the year. That £50 was for all the extra bits like knickers, socks, chocolate coins, stocking stuff, that between 4 children mounts up into a surprising amount of cash.

I know in the grand scheme of things, no stocking toys isn’t a big deal. But stood in Tesco this afternoon, it felt like it. It’s probably the head cold that’s making me a bit fragile. That and the whole Christmas expectations thing.

Tomorrow, I’ll fix what I can. Poundland will come to the rescue with some cheap bits to put in stockings, and no doubt some chocolate coins. I’ll rootle around and find some craft kits or something, and it will all work. The kids aren’t that material to be honest, and they won’t be counting presents, they never have.

It *will* work. The only person that makes Christmas hard here is me. And I need to get over that.

  1. Well that kinda sucks. But you’re right. It will work out. Always do.

  2. (((Jax))) That’s hard. I’ve had cards (our personal payment cards) rejected at supermarkets before but never a voucher when I would have had a glow of joy around me at having them. Especially £50 worth!
I stopped using a cash back site when earlier this year I was buying a DVD box set from Base.com directly for £31.09. Then just before I was about to check out I remembered the cash back site, was pleased with self for remembering it so went through that and exactly the same set, still through Base.com but delivered by another company was £52.58. So either I’d already managed to “reserve” the one last box set at £31.09 or something a little more strange is going on with them knowing you are viewing through a cash back site so don’t show you the lowest price. I grabbed screen shots at the time thinking to do a bit of investigative work but have never found the time.

  3. i.e. going through the cashback site wouldn’t let me see the £31.09 offer at all, yet going to Base.com directly I could, even from a different device.

    1. That is a bit bizarre. I’ve not come across Base.com, I use topcashback against sites I would use anyway.

      1. But that’s what I was doing, going to a site I was going to use anyway. But when accessing via topcashback it wouldn’t give the same low price and had I not gone direct first I wouldn’t have noticed as all the same web page appearance. So now I will always check direct first and then see if can go through topcashback and not have a price difference. I’ve used base.com a few times for DVDs, no problem with them.

  4. Who did you win the prize from? Surely they can’t give you invalid coupons as a prize?
I know the six of you will have a wonderful Christmas with games and films on tv, hot chocolate and just being together. That’s really what it’s all about not extra chocolate coins. And you are right, Poundland is fantastic. Wishing you a very merry Christmas from Jerusalem (not quite Bethlehem but close). xxxx

    1. I think it just hasn’t been validated properly. I’ll follow it up and hopefully fix it, but won’t be in time for Christmas.
And yes, we will have a wonderful time anyway. Thank you.

  5. Oh hugs lovely that’s awful. I feel for you so much. We do put a lot of pressure on ourselves trying to make Christmas special for our children. They will be happy no matter what you give them. Thinking of you lovely xx

    1. We do, and it’s daft. Christmas isn’t about the parcels and the tinsel, and I should focus on what it is about.
