Thinking about food #GlobalHunger

I spend a lot of time thinking about food. I’m using thinking slimmer to help me manage my weight to get back to where I was pre baby, and my thoughts are mainly positive. I’m thinking about new recipes to try on the family. How to juggle my vegetarian requirements with those of my rather more carnivorously inclined offspring. How to stretch our limited budget and still shop ethically, how to ensure nothing is wasted.

I hate food waste. Even this week, camping with no access to a fridge, I’ve tried to make sure there’s been little thrown away. I wait til Smallest has finished with her breakfast and polish it off for her, rounding off the half portion with some fruit.

It feels obscene to be throwing food away in a world where so many children go hungry every day. I don’t know what we have to do to make the changes needed. Our country doesn’t produce anywhere near enough food to keep us in the style we’re accustomed to; are there farmers out there selling their produce to us and not making enough money to keep themselves and their children fed?

What do we do to change the inequalities? Fairtrade doesn’t cut it in a recession, and charities can only do so much. Changes need to be made at a global governmental level, and the twitter chat going on right now is about just that. Will you lend a voice to the voiceless and help persuade your government to change the world?

Every child should have the chance to dream of Olympic glory, instead of lying awake and hungry. Speak out for them.

  1. I totally agree. It’s obscene that people regualry eat more than double the calories they need when we are taking food from countries that are starving. I’m trying to do a very strict diet atm but everyday I struggle with whether to finish DD’s uneaten food or chuck it and eat my prescribed food. Eating the leftovers has one every tiome so far – I just can’t waste food.

  2. Thank you Jax for helping to lend a voice to the voiceless. Let’s build on the success of the Games and create a lasting legacy for children fighting hunger today and for many years to come.
