The emperor's new clothes?

Yes, as the head of the Qualifications and Curriculum Authority, Dr Ken Boston, insisted, the curriculum will still contain the essentials: grammar, Shakespeare, the British Empire and algebra.

I guess grammar is pretty essential – I use it everyday, and wince when I receive emails from colleagues who don’t quite get it. Not just wince though, there is also real difficulty in understanding what is meant on some occasions. But I’m not sure that Shakespeare and the British Empire feature regularly in or out of work, and algebra is more of a hobby than an essential.

Who decides this stuff?

  1. I think it’s one of those political things. It would be too unpopular if they didn’t say it.
