I didn’t particularly enjoy it.
I liked the first one in the series. It had a plausible new magic system, an interesting world, strong characters. It was promising.
Book 2 was somewhat confusing though. The two main characters were separated and the story line jumped constantly between the two, leaving me constantly confused as to who I was reading about.
Book 3 is even worse. There’s a bad habit of killing people who then revive in a variety of ways, which means that you lose emotional commitment to the story when you don’t know whether a death is permanent or not. And the narrative jumps dizzyingly between Avry and Kerrick – I assume this is slightly clearer in a paper version (perhaps there’s white space? ) but in the Kindle netgalley it sometimes happens without even a new line, which really interrupts the flow.
I’m not completely put off Maria Snyder, there were a lot of aspects about this to like, but overall this was not a strong book.
