Sum total of education today

if you scream or pull faces, I will send you to your room.

Hm, must be more than that surely?

Not a lot more though. They are both immersing themselves in buildabearville, due to having the friend codes now. Small will play on the computer for a while and then wander away, while Big is rather more obsessed and kept trying to get him to come off so that she could go back on.

At one point when she was sent to her room she did some reading, The Legend of the Lost Keys (Look & Read) she says. Must get her to write up a book list and do at least occasional reviews, especially of the non fiction ones she goes at. She says she remembers watching this in one of our Look and Read marathons, it’s entirely possible. That’s quite a while ago though.

And at one point when he came off the computer I asked him if he would read to me, from The Magic Tree House 1: Valley of the Dinosaurs. He was very happy to do so, and read me a chapter, only needing help with the dinosaur names and bizarrely “chew” and “plains”. (Bizarre in that he managed words like “cautiously” without any assistance at all.) Although he didn’t want help with plains, he just wanted to know what it meant. Then we had an explore online and ordered him a Magic Tree House passport, and did the quiz for Book 1 (which needed him to read the next two chapters to find out the last answer, which he did quickly, to himself, without voice or even moving lips. ) His reading aloud is excellent – it has pace and emotion, he appears to understand all punctuation marks, and reads better than most other members of his class from last term. I’ve no idea how he’s got to that stage, but I’m very pleased he has. Tim printed off the Certificate of Travel which has a stamp to put in his passport when it arrives, and he was very happy with that.

I’ve mainly sat around. I feel a bit in limbo – there’s so much up in the air atm, and with a holiday next week it doesn’t seem the right time to get down to anything. I want to sort out some kind of meal/ menu planner but again right now isn’t the time to do it, and I’d like an overview idea of basics that I’d like to know we’re touching on regularly, but with a holiday coming up that seems a bit pointless too.

Ah well. One thing I can do before my holiday is get my CMA out of the way – I worked out how to get into the OU website and find myself today (I’m assuming they will send information about that at some point, it could be in the rather hefty box that appeared today I suppose. I tried to install a plugin so that I could timetable the various assignments that are coming up but failed dismally at that 🙁 My only real success of the day lies in that I checked that my car insurance was still valid (it is) and changed price plans on my phone to Solo 15 *without* losing my rag at the self important idiot in the T-mobile call centre. She works for the loyalty team, hah! I’ve been trying to get through to them for over a month, in an extremely half-hearted way, and even today it took two attempts as they cut me off first time. Bleargh.

  1. Jax – I’d love to ask you about Rachel and maths – but I don’t have your email address. Can you let me have it? Thanks,
    Debbie

  2. We watched the Legend of the Lost Keys together – my two have seen it about 4 times I think. It was on CBBC over and over again for a couple of years.

  3. I think sometimes it’s ok to take a little bit of time out when big things like holidays are approaching, it’s difficult to keep going full pelt at such times. For the kids as well as the grown ups. Sounds like you actually achieved quite a bit actually, I *hate* anything involving ringing companies. Such a waste of time!
    Enjoy your hol 🙂
