Stay Away

“UN nuclear monitors have advised Japan to consider expanding the evacuation zone around the stricken reactors at the Fukushima Daiichi plant.

An exclusion zone with a radius of 20km (12 miles) is currently in place but the UN says safe radiation limits have been exceeded 40km away. … … The US and UK earlier advised their citizens in Japan to keep at least 80km from the plant.” BBC News

I am equivocal about nuclear power, I know we aren’t in an earthquake zone, but it just made me think and this is a map of UK power stations, the circles are 80km.

  1. think i may be just outside of the “danger zone” but, erm, if that one blows up, can I come and visit you (and if the one near you blows up you are welcome here!)
It’s a lot of hype for the most part I’m sure, I think people watch so much sci fi where there’s a nuclear winter and we all mutate into mindless zombies etc that they all get a bit over excited. But then, Chernobyl was a bit of a worry for a while….

  2. You are always welcome, but we are in the Sizewell circle. 🙂
The thing which worries me most is that when a scientist says that something is a once in a thousand year event, the people making the decisions always seem to be convinced that what he said was “It won’t happen for a thousand years” and they then act all surprised when it goes and happens the next year.

  3. The midlands is looking a good place to move to lol.

Suddenly I feel less resentful about having to relocate from the North West to the East Midlands…

  5. It does mean that I may have to revise my opinions, I have always believed that it was impossible to live too far away from Leeds, for example.
