I’m beginning to understand why I rarely seem to get on top of anything. I know I’m very poor at organisation, but on the one day that I should have had a clear run at various stuff, I ended up losing a couple of hours to a dentist trip.
Big has braces. She’s had them 6 weeks, and we’re just coming up to the first adjustment fitting. Or at least we were. Last night while we were eating (home made) pizza, she suddenly cried out and burst into tears – a wire had somehow come loose at the back of her lower jaw. So this morning I was on the phone to the orthodontist at 20 past 10, and in his waiting room by 11.15.
I thought that was pretty good. None of us were dressed when I made the phonecall, so we got three of us dressed, breakfasted and out of the house in 40 minutes flat, including dismantling (and remantling – why isn’t that a word? should be) the carseat which I’d somehow put together wrong yesterday. I was also impressed that they arranged an appt so quickly.
The good news is that all he did was rewire her a week early, so we don’t have to go back next week. The bad news is that she hasn’t been managing to clean her teeth around the brackets particularly well, and she already has tartar starting to build up. More supervision needed there then.
So that was the morning wiped out. Then lunch, and suddenly it was mid afternoon and I’d managed nothing except dropping off the bundles of clothes at the Red Cross shop on the way back from the dentist. So I sent Small for a timer out of the kitchen, and we had a ten minute tidy. Made a huge difference in here (even if one of the children really wasn’t helping!) and turned the day around rather. I also cleared some (empty) boxes out of the hall and into the recycling bin, and tbh, that was about it. I dealt with some emails – getting virtually organised is definitely in the plan too, and started looking at how to do some tech stuff that needs sorting in the back end of the blog. I used to do all this stuff – I used to run a support team of java programmers, DBAs, and first line support for goodness sake! – so there didn’t ought to be any reason to be nervous about it.
But I was. So I fiddled around a bit, and then ran out of time as I needed to cook.
Had a jar of Very Lazy sausage casserole sent (disclosure – it was free) to review, so that was on the menu tonight. I hoped that it would liven up my offerings for the carnivores in the family, but it didn’t quite hit the mark. The quality was excellent, the ease of casseroling was fine (although I do have to say that I usually fry onions and sausage, so I am struggling to work out ho wthis particular recipe qualifies as very lazy) and all three carnivores present at meal time ate well, but apparently sausages are just better in toad in the hole. So perhaps I should explore some of the other recipes they have available – I rather fancy the mushroom stroganoff.
Tootled in and out taking Big to guides and bringing her back and in between jaunts ate. And now it’s just me and the baby still up, though she’s beginning to droop, and I am wondering if I’ll get some sleep despite her mammoth and completely out of character 3 hour nap. Really need it – am tired and in pain, can’t decide if my breast is just bruised from accidentally missing feed on it overnight, or whether I have a blocked duct or mastitis. Whatever it is, it really really hurts.
Here’s hoping everyone else had a more successful day of it.
