Speech Language Pathologists – Hanen Programs on Language Development and Delay

Speech Language Pathologists – Hanen Programs on Language Development and Delay

Anyone come across this? Just had the speech therapist on the phone, following up to check that the stuff she put in the post on Makaton had got here, apologising for being here so long the other day (!) and asking if I’d like to borrow the parents book that goes with this course. She’s going to drop it off on Monday. Oh and she recommends a video with Dave Benson, signed nursery rhymes(affiliate), anyone seen that one?

My only qualm with all of this is that I’d rather stick to BSL, but I don’t think it’s a biggie tbh. *must* find my dictionary though. I did say on the phone about having been concerned that I was just being a neurotic parent, she dismissed that and said she’d far rather have an early referral that requires little intervention than have someone wait til nursery/ school age to panic. No chance of that then 😉

Haven’t come across Hanen but am impressed by the link, looks good. I don’t think you are paranoid, quite the opposite.

  3. Dave does a couple of Makaton videos afaik, DH kept sending me Ebay links but I don’t think I ever succumbed 😉 Glad hes getting sorted!

  4. Dino met Dave Benson Phillips earlier this year – same one?
BTW this aft was lovely – ta.

  5. Hi Jax,Not really related to what you asked ,but just triggered it off.
At St davids camp ,we camped next to wonderful family who we have met at camps past.
Their second son,4,has delayed speech and they were using something called the HANDLE method.
I don’t think that there are many practitioners around yet,but it’s getting bigger.
It looked complex but it also looked really good and common sense was at the heart of it.

  6. You don’t have any contact details for them do you? I’ve tried a google on HANDLE method and I’m not getting anywhere. Cheers.

  7. The nursery rhyme video is great, we have worn ours out. it’s definitely worth buying.
Most makaton signs are the same as BSL, it’s the syntax that is different so I wouldn’t worry too much. With Makaton you speak and sign at the same time so the word order is the same as English, I never did get the hang of BSL word order….

  8. Gonna have to fix the video then aren’t I? sigh.

  9. try Handle institute and neuro developmental as key words….

HI jax try the above too!!
I just sent you an e mail ,very waffling ….sorry!

  11. The NHS SALT tried to get me to use Makaton but I refused as I already knew BSL and I stuck to that – I told her I wanted to be able to understand what Emma was saying! In using BSL signs you don’t have to teach them the syntax as you could use a form of Signed Supported English – which just means using BSL signs but only the words you use with English! I have heard of the Hanen method by the way but only from the woman I met who gave my number to my present private speech therapist. I think she reccomends that if it is appropriate. It is about using very very simple English when you are talking to the child. About talking in baby language really and in simple sentences. Apparently there are courses that you can go on. I did google it but didn’t find much out about it. I will have to ask the SALT on Saturday although I don’t think Emma needs it as she is passed that now I think.
