Small is reading.

After a long chat with Tim’s brother last night, Tim and I came to the conclusion that Small needs whole word recognition, that phonics is not going to be the way forward for him. A has been doing that a small amount at school with him too, but today he sat and read Read at Home: More Level 1A: The Snowman (Read at Home Level 1a) and Read at Home: Level 1a: Funny Fish. Honestly, I cried – I know I’m kind of emotional at the moment, but hearing him read, and what’s more, read with expression, even books like this just made me tear right up. He’s brought them home and just read them to Tim as well – only sticking points are a couple of the names, but the rest of it was spot on.

If Oxford Reading Tree is what it takes, that’s what we will use, and hey, they aren’t nearly as bad as fairy books 😉

  1. Congratulations to Small! We all get misty eyed over the children reaching the ‘milestones’ in life!

    Yay! well done Small!

  3. Way to go Small! DS1 couldn’t do phonics at all, its a common problem with ASD kids but unfortunately not recognised by all but the most well read SENCOs. (Not saying thats the problem with Small, just my experience of whole word reading). He started off by mostly memorising the ORT books but now, at almost 10, reads OK. His pronunciation leaves a lot to be desired when he meets new words as he doesn’t have the phonic skills to decode them, he doesn’t often have to be told a word twice but listening to him read the Horrible Science books out loud can lead to a lot of wincing on my part! One game thats good for common words are those almost jigsaws where only the correct word will link to the picture, do you know the ones I mean? I can’t think what they are called but we played them a lot. I hope his enthusiasm continues!

  4. I think Emma is a whole word person as well. It was a great experience for me to watch her work through the word recognition process/development herself 🙂
    Great achievement Small!

  5. Well done Small, and well done Jax and Tim for helping him get there. A huge hurdle cleared, lots of things opened up to him, etc.
