More reading

I am not doing as much blogging as I had wanted to do, nor as much studying. Instead I have read a book or two.

Black Powder War Naomi Novik.

I’m not sure I did this book justice reading it in an evening – I suspect that really it deserves to be savoured and digested like the meaty and well researched tome it is. But it’s also a romping good yarn, and it was the yarn quality that drew me last night, when I needed to spend time elsewhere, or elsewhen, not here in my living room. And it’s also the quality of the yarn that had me up a good hour later than I should have been, pushing back the boundaries of sleep, needing to finish it off to find out what happens next. Slightly disgruntled to find a cliffhanger in the last chapter though! Be warned, she wants to keep us reading.

Heroes Adrift Moira Moore.

Third instalment in the Heroes saga, and I found this least satisfying in that nothing much seemed to happen to move the story or the characters on, leaving us in a similar place to where we were after book two. I think I was hoping for a little more growth particularly on the part of the narrator/ female character, especially as the situation they were placed in (trying not to give too many spoilers) gave plenty of room for her to realise some more stuff about herself. Not disappointed enough to want to give up on the series but plenty of time to meditate as book 4 is still in progress.
