Saturday Snippets 25 October 2014

{watching} Cast Away. Tom Hanks really is a very good actor. Lots of opportunities for education too, as we discussed his choices throughout, how best to make fire, and what might have been in that unopened package.

{reading} not a lot right now. I’m feeling a touch adrift. Big got a good looking book in the post, but she’s taken it to Scaresville with her.

{writing} Nano prep. Storyboarding in fact. Oddly for me I have visual imagery going with this one, not quite sure where it’s coming from. So I’ve done outline sketches, which is definitely a first.

{eating} ribs. I have no idea how I was vegetarian for 20 years. None at all.

{feeling} adrift in dissonance. For example, you might have noticed the new ad in the sidebar. I haven’t used ads on the blog before, but I am exploring all the ways that I can make an income at the moment, and given the amount of time I spend on writing here, it’s only sensible to include advertising. But I don’t like it. I don’t like commercialisation. I run the occasional sponsored post or giveaway, and it clashes. It doesn’t feel like my writing. I use affiliate links, and that would be OK, except most of them are to Amazon, and they are Evil (apparently) so then I feel like I’m being Evil too. But other affiliate programs are just so badly put together it’s next to impossible to earn anything from them.

Gah. There’s an answer there somewhere. I’m not sure where at the moment. Money isn’t the only dissonant strand at the moment – the Pretending to be normal review stirred up a lot of emotion the other day, and I haven’t fully worked through it yet, but this won’t be a snippets post if I don’t stop soon!

Snapshots

Big has gone off to Scaresville with her own tent this week (yes, she has a guardian too before anyone thinks I’m just posting her across the county alone) which feels quite big. I’m hoping she’s warm enough with all the bedding she’s taken with her! Small has finished the history and science bits of the Year 6 book he was working through last year, so we need to find him something else for the non computer based bits of his education. Smallest played (and won) her first game of Monopoly this week. (She was soundly thrashed in the second one, and there were tears, but it’s all a learning experience, right?) Tigerboy can now pronounce Big’s actual name (yes, we do sometimes call her Big here too) without missing sounds, which is one of those bittersweet passing out of baby moments. He’s also graduated communication group and done his first video review, so a big week all round.

101? I’m working on my Nano prep. Yeah, that’s about it for this week.

I’ve got linkies set up til the end of the year (I think) so I’ll keep on putting them in, but after that I’m going to have a rethink as generally speaking no one takes part. This is probably partly because I’m not very reliable at putting the linky in 😉

  1. Me and the kids watched Castaway a good four years ago and they still regularly refer to things from it – it’s an excellent film for ongoing conversations and yes, Tom Hanks is brilliant.
Loved Tigerboy’s video review – made me smile lots 🙂 and also enjoying you enjoying meat – if we were nearer to you I’d send you bacon from my pigs! 🙂

    1. Oh, now there’s an offer Nic! I bet that’s *good* bacon.
