Raising the profile of home education

Living on twitter as I do 😉 I often spot competitions aimed at schools/ pupils. I’ve taken to politely enquiring whether home educators can be included, and generally the answer is positive. It seems to me that this is a good way to keep us positively in the public eye, but it also seems that if the companies don’t get any home ed entries, I’m going to start to look (more like) a loon. So I thought I’d start a series of occasional posts highlighting any comps of this nature I’ve found, and encourage ppl to share them around and enter.

Today I saw an alliteration competition from publishers Inside Pocket. It was titled exclusively for schools – may have been the fastest ever revision when I tweeted at them and they added in home educators 🙂 It says winner to be chosen in April 2011, so I’d assume it’s open until the end of March. Prize is a book and a signed copy of a print of the child’s choice – doesn’t appear to have an age guide on it.

Still open on Digi-tale, there’s a competition to win a toshiba folio 100. It’s for children aged 11-19 to review one of a list of books They are happy to include home educated children, just pop that on the entry. (Check out the comment thread for where I asked.) This one finishes on 27th March, so get reading/ writing!

Also on digi tale there’s a photo competition to win a Nintendo dsi-xl. Also open to 11-19 year olds – get snapping. Closes 27th March as well.

FlyingStartEducation mag have an easy entry competition to win a KS2 Discovery visit to an English Heritage property. I asked on twitter and I’m fairly sure that English Heritage were happy for home educators to be involved – can’t find a closing date, though I’ve asked on fb, so hopefully it’s still open. (ETA when I entered it, I got a message “Started: February 13, 2011 End: March 31, 2011” so looks like we’re good. Hoping I hadn’t entered it already and forgotten and now disqualified myself!)

If you find any comps about that are aimed at schools but you get home educators involved, please let me know so that I can help share them around. I guess my aim is to get ppl to realise we’re here, we’re real and we’re not going away. I think it’s our best line of defence. To be normal 😉

thanks interesting blog thanks for making that point for home ed children

    1. @divasupermum no problem – I just think getting us out and about and included is good for the home ed community 🙂

  3. And not just competitions… Google ‘Potatoes for Schools’ and ‘Bake your own lawn’. For projects that are also happy to send their stuff out to hone educators.

  4. @Sarah thanks for those suggestions. The Grow your own potatoes is here and Bake your lawn took a bit more tracking down, but I located it here.

  5. Thanks for them Jax, have passed details on to the appropriate members of the family 🙂
Must get our potatoes in the ground, lol! But think making bread from scratch sounds a bit ambitious – the breadmaker is quite exciting enough for me 😉
Jax, you might have missed on FF that the results for the Primary Maths Challenge final came out this week and the “home education group” got a little mention, which was nice 🙂 The word is most definitely spreading, even if it feels like it’s a bit slow sometimes 🙂

  6. You are correct! Ends 31st March. Good luck with your entry. And yes, home ed groups are welcome if similar in size to school class and all parents are happy that the children may be featured in the magazine or online for publicity 🙂
