I’m sorry, what is this “extremely strict” versus “less strict” wibbling? I am a vegetarian. I do not eat animal products. Therefore I will be swearing off Mars bars (not that I can remember the last time I ate one) and other products from Masterfoods. If this includes Galaxy, I may be found weeping in a corner, but I won’t be eating it. I will be complaining to them here, please feel free to join in.

  4. aaarghhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhh minstrels and maltesers! i suppose rennet isn’t animal fat, but it is calves stomach lining – yum!

I suppose by “less stict veggies” they mean the type that eat normal cheese (also usually curdled with a bit of rennet apaprently) or even more commically, those that eat fish as tehy aren’t really animals? I always think of “strict veggies” being vegans but obviously it depends on how you look at animal rennet being an animal product that causes harm to whoever made it 🙄

  6. You are all so funny (I mean this in the nicest possible way). When I saw this story this morning I found myself fervently wishing I was a vegetarian so that I couldn’t eat them any more.
    Being put off chocolate by the inclusion of an ingredient I don’t want to eat seems like a good thing to me.

    Must admit if I were veggie, I would be really upset, I am very partial to Maltesers.

  8. I can’t eat them anyway – I’m lactose intolerant. However, if they didn’t need to include these products before then why do they need to include them now?!

  9. I’m not at all impressed with them. I too don’t eat their products very often, but I’m pretty miffed to see this happening. I know at least 3 people who will be writing to complain about this, and will probably be boycotting them. And let’s face it, we won’t be missing much really if that’s what they think choccy should be made of.
    I must confess though that I misheard Dave when he told me about it, and thought he said they were using whale rennet… Not nice, but as I said, not a viable ingredient 😀

  11. Well, as too why they are doing it, the comment about ‘switching of sourcing of ingredients’ probably means it’s related to cost (I’m assuming that they were using cultured rennet before)
    T-bird, most/lots of ‘normal’ cheese is made with cultured rennet (using bacteria) anyway nowadays – if you look in the supermarket you’ll see the little veggie ‘V’ symbol on them. Though personally I’ve always thought that it was a bit pointless to make such a fuss about a minor ingredient of the cheese making process when the whole dairy producing industry requires the breeding and killing of cows to get the milk production anyway. Esp. as many of those self same people would then happily drink non-veggie wine etc.

  12. I won’t be able to eat it now. Just the thought of calves stomach lining would make it somewhat unappealing. Am mourning Minstrels…
    It may not be logical, given that we do eat dairy, but there is a difference in my mind between a substance that necessitates the death of the animal and an animal product like milk. When I was lactating I used to wonder if it would not be possible to produce ‘ethical’ cow’s milk by just sharing with calves. You could let the cows keep their babies and milk them as well. It would have to a be an extremely expensive, luxury product though. Pointless wittering, sorry. Vegans and meat eaters alike probably think I am mad. Would only appeal to guilty vegetarians like me!

  13. Being vegan, I stick to Green and Black’s, very yummy!
    I was more upset at Sainsbury’s considering to drop the ‘vegan’ label off their own-brand foods, but they’ve changed their minds about that now. Which I’m very thankful for considering the amount of time I spend reading labels!

  14. Allie, I agree with your difference. But any milk you buy from the shop *has* resulted in the death of animals which in a way makes it worse because in theory it shouldn’t necessitate it. It’s resulted in the UNnecessary death of animals which in my mind is actually worse. At least when you eat meat the death was necessary to produce the meat. That said I’m not even a vegetarian, but I do often wonder whether I ought to be.

  15. I don’t think sharing is the issue Allie. You have to put the cow in calf every year to keep up the milk producation,so you would end up with thousands of cows (half of which would be males and so not any use at all), unless of course you kill and eat most of them, which is rather where we come in.

  16. You can stop mourning your chocolate – no doubt you heard they’re scrapping the idea due to overwhelming public demand. 🙂 Amazing that it took over 6000 people complaining to make them realise what a stupid move it was.
    And what was that about a book club Jax…?
