News, reviews, competitions and bits.

A few things to cover this week, though not as many odd news releases from PRs for some reason. I did get word yesterday of a new competition from Lloyds Home insurance with a top prize of £10000 – something to do with submitting pictures of your favourite room. As I don’t really have such a thing I won’t be following it up, but any readers who would like to can click through to the Lloyds my favourite room website. Do let me know how you get on!

In terms of reviews, I’ve been trying out a Linwoods Super foods supplement – I’ve got the Flaxseed, Sunflower and Pumpkin seed pack. It worked OK in porridge, though made for a slightly gritty texture, and was absolutely fine in my muesli mixture this morning. I couldn’t bring myself to put it on my baked potato last night, although that is one of the suggestions on the packet. I haven’t noticed any major differences yet, but I’m quite pleased to have found a way of adding Omega 3 to my diet without having to drink flaxseed oil any more. (Have you tried that stuff? It’s awful!) It is one of the things that I worry about slightly being vegetarian and pregnant, missing out on Omega 3, so this testing came at a good time for me.

Big has been testing out all forms of Vosene Families products. The After Swim has been doing good things for her hair – she swims three times a week atm, although it looks like that will be going up shortly to 4, and the actual time in pool increasing drastically. It doesn’t particularly help with the itchy skin she experiences, but apparently that isn’t chlorine related, it’s to do with the drying effect of being in water for too long (who knew) so we’re investigating other routes of dealing with that. Personally I love the kids sensitive hair and body wash – really gentle and smells lovely, lavender and chamomile. We’ve not had any problems with hair visitors anyway, but I’m certainly not averse to the added tea tree aspect of many of the products.

Book reviews – I received Pig in the Middle a little while ago and read it pretty much in one sitting. It’s a fairly easy read, but left me feeling pretty unsatisfied I’m afraid, I just wasn’t getting the humour. The author has got a bad case of self pity going on or what came through to me as self pity, and just isn’t the kind of person I can empathise with at all. I found myself comparing it to Deric Longden books I’ve read in the past, and it’s just not in the same league. That may well be an unfair comparison, but it’s what sprang to mind.

Smallest, on the other hand, has been highly entertained by HIT entertainment’s new series, Mike the Knight. I don’t know quite what it is about it that she likes, but she really does like it. I was highly entertained by listening to the two older children critiquing it this evening – Big was impressed that they didn’t know what bananas were (after all, they didn’t know about bananas in Tudor times and this is medieval) but upset about the riding hat Evie magicked up. I pointed out the dragons… If you’d like to catch it yourself, it’s on Cbeebies weekdays at 16.05.

And finally in 20, 20, 20 updates – I managed to take a whole bin liner of stuff out of the house to a charity shop, and only bring in a small ball of wool in exchange. Keep up that rate of progress and we’ll be decluttered in, well, probably, months…but it’s a start.
