mutterings on a monday

As is usual when I wake up with a plan, my children wake up with a different one. So shortly after I’d completed the breakfast ritual (it is now a ritual, with my little boy who loves food) I found myself delivering simultaneous individual intensive maths lessons to Big and Small.

This was never going to go well. So I called in reinforcements (there has to be some benefit to having dp working from home!) and he dealt with probability while I focused on highest common factors and lowest common multiples.

Small had decided that he’d rather get a week’s worth of maths out of the way in one day. When he buckled down and focussed on it, he completed it in around an hour. He’s quite mathematically inclined, though sadly he doesn’t see the point in it. I do wish I could do something to really inspire him to enjoy it. Maybe it will click at some point.

Alongside this there was baby amusement and toddler entertainment – Smallest did some drawing, worked on stickers and hammered. She loves her hammering kit – it’s from Haba and was sent for review. It really deserves an entire post of its own given the amount of use we get out of it. It’s creative, requires concentration, develops hand eye coordination and both fine and gross motor control, and all in all is a jolly good toy. My only complaint about this set is that the nails came in a little plastic bag that is not at all reusable. Supplying a sensible safe container is an obvious enhancement.

Anyway. Am being heckled to take small people to bed, so will enhance this post with pictures and links tomorrow.

  1. I can’t wait to do maths with DD – even though she’ll be at school this is one of the things I want to do with her at home.
