Musical education.

Tonight while eating tea we had the radio on. And the most awful cover of Losing my religion was played, which started a discussion of music. And before you know it an hour and a half had passed with us playing Youtube vids for the children, to broaden their musical horizons.

We started with American Pie. Which Big loved, and Small hated. Then we tried Stairway to Heaven, the original version, the Rolf Harris cover and a Dolly Parton version. Which led naturally on to both Dolly and Whitney warbling their way through I will always love you. We segued easily into a spot of Bohemian Rhapsody and threw in some Abba. A fairly eclectic mix I’m sure you’ll agree 😉

And pretty much everything we played, Small hated. He’s not the most open minded or tolerant of ppl at the best of times, and probably right after tea wasn’t that good a time. Big enjoyed most stuff, though was utterly dismayed at hairstyles and clothing from the 70s – her fave was probably Dolly, closely followed by Don.

And then I asked on twitter and got the most fantastic set of suggestions back to extend the listening further.

So we’ve now got Beatles, Stones, Byrds, Who, Four seasons, Beach Boys, Elvis, Sinatra, Nat King Cole, and Nina Simone from pinkladyapril, U2, Alice Cooper, Guns’n’Roses, Extreme, Aerosmith, Fairport Convention, June Tabor, Lindisfarne, Nirvana, Ella Fitzgerald and Louis Armstrong from mamacrow. Oh, and there was Sir Cliff and Jerry lee Lewis from Puddytatpurr, as well as Flanders and Swan and Cole Porter from eroticnotebook.

So an eclectic list – must be something in there that Small will enjoy. Maybe. Especially as it turns out that he likes Christian rock group, Skillet. Which was a new one on me.

Have we missed any absolute must haves out? Appreciate your input.

  1. My smallest boy, who’s five, has a penchant for rock music, no idea where he gets it from, but the noisier the better. His favourite song is I Predict a Riot.

  2. May I suggest some Aretha Franklin (I say a little prayer) and Dusty Springfield (The look of love) and also Jimi Hendrix. I think it’s great that Youtube gives us access to such a huge musical database to broaden our childrens musical horizons.

  3. No idea what style Skillet are, but Creed and Evanesence are also god rockers 😀
