More Randy Pausch

on youtube via his journal.

spent the other evening reading back through old posts on this blog – very odd, lots of things on here that ring true but I don’t recall at all. I found myself wishing that I’d been more complete in what I recorded – so I’ve given myself a quick kick and decided I’ll record a little more.

With that in mind, how are the children?

Well, Big just started Brownies this week. She went in her Alice in Wonderland Queen of Hearts dress, which apparently wasn’t a good choice as although it’s perfectly possible for her to ride the big trike at school, she couldn’t play the odd game they played where you had to run about with your arm through your legs. Despite this, she wants to go back – the three year old who though other ppl believing in god was offensive appears to have given way to an 8 year old who either didn’t notice the words of the promise, or has found some kind of maturity to deal with it. I’m really hoping this works out for her – she so desperately wants to make friends, and since the very short play date arranged out of the bedroom window, she’s not seen anyone round here at all. It makes the alternative education path a very difficult one to follow at times.

Small is still very individual. He’s spent lots of this week working on things out of his Pirate birthday book. I was pressed into service to make pirate hats – I got large pieces of paper and had several small children join in 😀 and then at home I had to make him a pirate patch, which he promptly wore to bed and fell asleep in. Aw. Quite surprised that he hasn’t missed having Big in the bedroom with him, but it doesn’t appear to have been an issue for him, while she seems to have settled reasonably well in the front room although she is waking (and therefore waking me) very early. (She isn’t trying to wake me very early, but she isn’t very light footed when she charges to the bathroom at something past 6 each morning!)

Work is still work and at the same time not – I’m still a little surprised that all these experienced and qualified staff ask me what to do, but somewhere along my many and varied career paths I appear to have learnt the skill of being in charge. It’s working. And most of the children and I have worked out our various compromises – I’m still working on this one little blond boy who will insist on calling me mummy and ordering me around, but that’s no surprise to anyone is it? 😉

The house doesn’t feel very home like. I don’t really like privately renting – I don’t feel 100% secure. Not that I’m sure why I would feel more secure with a mortgage, but I did, so there you go. And now, once again, I’ve failed to have an early night, so I’m going to go get myself a cuppa and go to bed before I accidentally have a late one.

  1. Hope Brownies does work out well. The house is lovely though, although I do understand why you’re not 100% happy with renting.
