Yesterday, after lying around feeling sorry for myself for a while (which seems to be a common theme among my friends atm 😉 ) I pulled myself together and took the children to the library. Big decided she wanted to have another go at reading the Deathly Hallows and checked online that they had copies, and Small’s books were overdue, so when we eventually found them (safely shelved in his bedroom, obviously) we needed to go.
Surprisingly, given that our two previous areas didn’t, Suffolk charges children late fines. This is possibly a good idea as it might cause us to be a bit more organised in terms of when books need to go back, and it might mean the children learn to use the desk diary. Might, I say, as they haven’t done as I suggested and write the date in that the books need to go back. Ah well.
Small got himself a couple of easy reader early chapter book type things, The Strawberry Sorcerer and Gabby the Vampire Cabby
. Then he came to find me near the SF shelves and discovered that there are books about Doctor Who! Imagine that. So he chose one of those, Only Human
, and has read several pages of it today, having read both of the other books in quick succession. I love watching him read. He doesn’t sit in a chair, or even on the floor, like other ppl might. Instead he contorts himself, at one point he had his head on the floor next to the book, and his backside in the air, feet curled underneath him yet still managing to tap. It looks terribly uncomfortable, but it appears to suit him.
Big was unsuccessful in her search for the Deathly Hallows, she went and found a computer terminal and came back to tell me that they were all out. It seemed implausible, but I didn’t argue with her, just checked when I’d got home and found they were still in, but somewhere labelled Quick Choice, Fantasy. I wish there was a plan of the library somewhere, as I haven’t located the fantasy shelves, despite looking. It is a very disorganised library, with many wiggly shelving units squeezed in haphazardly. I don’t particularly like it, especially compared to our beautifully reorganised library in Yorkshire, but it’s what we’ve got, so I suppose I need to get used to it.
So Big didn’t find any Potter, but we did find the craft shelves, with two books on how to make dollshouses, Miniature Doll’s Houses and Making Character Doll’s Houses
. She’s fascinated by the idea, and Tim’s quite into it too, so we ended up with a prolonged discussion of the different scales involved, 1/12th and 1/24th (spot the maths creeping in there) as well as having a good luck at different styles of architecture through the ages (ooh, history tie in too, excellent) and then we spotted plans to make a cider press as seen on Victorian Farm 🙂
We already have a book on Dolls’ House Needlecrafts so if we ever get to the point of having a house to fit out, we’ll be well away. I’m hoping that this might chime in with Big’s interest in history and making things and give her a focus that we can build various other things onto.
Not much in the way of knitting or crochet books on the craft shelves, though I was interested to find one on circle looming, A Beginner’s Guide to Knitting on a Loom. Brought it home and scanned through it last night, and didn’t understand it at all, which was rather upsetting. I’ve been using a circle loom on and off for a couple of years, and followed the instruction leaflet that I got with them, whenever that was, but according to this book, I haven’t even scratched the surface of what you can achieve. Will have to see if I can find the looms and give some of it a try. Bit depressed as to how many of the things in it are made flat and sewn up – can’t quite see the point of that tbh. Ah well. I’ll give some of the stuff a go, but it looked very complicated.
And today, I’ve been pathetic again, but Tim and Big have been out in the garden. They went out to a garden centre and came back with various plants, and have then spent some time planting stuff out. While they were planting out, Small watched The Weakest Link Doctor Who special, then Big came in and watched it again while Tim popped out for a quick beer with his brother. I think they are enjoying being around the corner from each other 🙂
And now I get to ponder what I can eat. Joy.
