I love bloghopping.

I’ve been reading Random Acts of Reality since Anni recommended it a couple of days ago. Today I found on it a link to Neil Gaiman’s blog, which I have perused a time or two before. Reading back a few days I found his New Year wish, and it’s so good that I had to link it.

Well, I’ve already read one very good book, Sunshine. Robin McKinley is one of my all time favourite authors, from the straightforward fantasy-in-another-world stuff, to the fairytale retellings, to the alternate future (hm, can you have such a thing as an alternate future? Odd) and I highly recommend all of her work. I will add though, that Deerskin is not a book for the faint of heart and I certainly wouldn’t hand it out to a teenager willy nilly – I’ve discussed it with other adults, and without wanting to post spoilers too excessively, it does deal with rape and incest. Not in a gaudy sort of way, but definitely in detail.

As to the rest of Mr Gaiman’s wishes, I will resolve to do some more writing, other than just blogging, this year. I wanted two things as I grew up – I’m never going to be a vet now, so I guess I’d better be a writer.

In the rest of our homely news for the day, we had another go at making treasure maps, and apart from minor traumas when Small put the pen through the slightly damp paper, it worked out well for them both. We’re going to try it again later in the week with stronger cold tea, as the current batch must have been a bit watery and they didn’t get terribly brown paper. They did tie them up with ribbons and play quite happily for some time so that was good.

Big read to Small for a while while I was scouring the kitchen. (Yuk, bleargh, and I should point out that Tim cleans it down every night anyway, as we really are doing our level best to remove temptation for the small and furries.) And now the mighty hunter has returned and is kipping on my foot while I listen to the smalls in the bath. Time to go wash their hair and decant them into bed, with added stories – they have an extra day at school this week so plan for it being a long tiring week. And I’m already hyperventilating at the idea of driving them along the same road I crashed on. 🙁

Ooh, and I forgot to note that Big lost a tooth! Without any whinging, wailing or bloodshed, I was very proud of her 🙂
