I know where you've been going

Some of you have been tootling off to the lactivist haven’t you? 🙂 You’ve no secrets from me 😀

Anyway, now that I’ve cleared that up, what has been happening nearer home?

It’s been a quiet day here, mainly due to my stinking head cold. Gave the children chance to really get into some autonomous education, and they went for it full on. Big watched an entire morning’s worth of Look and Read and I could hear her sounding things out and joining in left, right and centre. She seems to be doing some sort of self led explosion into words right at the moment, as evidenced by the letter she wrote for me the other day, and she did a card for her best friends birthday yesterday as well.

Actually, that’s not completely true. She’s just doing some sort of overall explosion into self sufficiency. She’s figured out browsers and the internet, or at very least cbeebies and nickjr ;), and I’ve spotted her reading and writing all sorts of things. She made a vast stack of paper aeroplanes the other day, and yesterday I showed her how to make a pirate hat, so there are rather a lot of those about too. It’s all rather wonderful to watch tbh.

Small, not to be left out, appears to be focussing on imaginative play. They were playing “barbie” (yes, another new word) and he had a doll saying hello, and byebye as it came and went. Then in the bath tonight, he built himself an aeroplane out of a bottle and a bath book. Well, I was impressed 😉

In other news, while sat very still, (mainly because I got woozy every time I got up) I got into a ‘discussion’ on UKHE about the nature of the HE community (with me maintaining that there isn’t a single one, but probably lots of separate ones), specifically wrt ppl’s attitudes to funding. Now, let’s be clear here, you don’t get any funding back from central government if you put your kids into private education, and home education *could* be viewed as a very exclusive type of private education. But there are ppl who think it would be nice if we got a bit of a break, usually towards exam fees. And I think it’s a valid debate, and I get a little annoyed with the attitude that the only ppl who think that are newbies who don’t understand the arguments. There are arguments for and against, and you can bet that any money back would come with strings, but I still think it would be good to have the debate, out and open and frequently.

And while we’re at it on debate, there’s a DFES consultation open for the next day or so, that talks about school registers and stuff – if you want to read it for yourself it’s online, and you can respond online too.

We only have the freedoms we have because ppl have fought for them – it’s our turn for the front line, let’s all be aware that it’s there.

Right, that’s your pep talk for the evening. I’m off to get some more lemon tea and maybe some couscous. Dragging myself to work tomorrow because it’s the kids end of term at school, and I know they’d hate to miss this.

  1. I feel duly pep talked! Will go and check the respond link, I’m on the yahoo group for the dfes consultation thing but it all goes over my head so I don’t read it much. Kind of feels a bit pointless to fight, if I’m honest, but there we go.

  2. IKWYM, Sarah, but as a long term peaceful protester, I have had some successes in my life, so I think it is possible to win out. Most recent example of course is WRT the Guidance in Scotland.

  3. Hope you feel better soon Jax. And the kids too!
