How much more education can we fit in one day????

It occurred to me that this blog has been somewhat devoid of home educational reporting recently. That’s because we’ve come out of the sit-down-and-do-work stage that we went into a little while ago, it appeared to serve its purpose and kickstarted the learning process again. We now have voluntary turning off of the television (ah bliss!) and various activities going on all over the place.

Reading is still a little painful – it’s mainly a confidence issue rather than anything else. Big prefers to have me sitting right next to her at all times assisting with every word, and I find it incredibly annoying that she can read a word three times on one page, turn the page over and be unable to read it on the next page. Yurgh. But even when we have a gap of several days between sitting down at a book, I can still see improvement each time (no idea how *that* happens) so I’m not stressing about it.

History, we’ve still got a major Elizabethan fest going on. Just this morning while I was sorting out the dining room (this will be a recurring theme over the next couple of weeks I’m afraid) I came across the Illustrated Encyclopedia of Art and we spent a few minutes going through the pages on Elizabethan art and architecture. Big now has a small digital camera that I got free from Which online (I’d find an affiliate link, but they don’t appear to have one) and we take it out and about and she takes pictures of houses to bring back and discuss with Tim (he did architecture in case you’re wondering why she discusses with him rather than me 😉 ) So far the pictures haven’t been desperately good, but it’s a good experience I think.

While tidying the living room yesterday, I came across her Twist and Shout maths game (think that was what it was called) that she had for her birthday. She spent lots of yesterday and quite a bit of today playing it, so number bonds are definitely coming on. Knitting seems to be helping with that as well 😆

This morning, the overt reason for excavating the dining room was to find her recorder book, and she’s had her first recorder lesson. I’m sure this is ever so good for her, though not quite so sure about its affects on my nerves. She’s also been spending a lot of time on the puter in the dining room, on CBeebies, Adiboo and something else, I forget what it’s called, so no doubt that’s got something educational to it.

Certainly had when Small sat down to it for a bit, then came wandering proudly in with the picture he’d drawn and then printed out for himself! He was joining in with the clapping in the recorder lesson as well, and his signing is taking off rapidly.

So there’s lots going on. We’re going to have to have some interesting conversations about how all of this takes shape in a couple of weeks time though.

Oh, and the crashing fall yesterday appears to have had no terrible ill effects this morning – her ankle is fine now despite her having been unable to walk on it last night (hm, unless she wanted to!) and the bruise on her chin apears to have gone away.

  1. I think is is a contextual thing,that not seeing the same word,it sounds like she is reading a word ,then a word,then a word…….
    Mine being older when they read didn’t read a word and a word and a word they read lots of words in one glance and so the context helps……
    It is a recognised different thing,sounds a bit odd ,looking at how I have just explained it……
