Geology, black bags and backward names.

We went off to school to pick up the car and timed it so that the kids at school were just finished lunch so that Big and Small could have running around time. It went well – I kept a close eye on Small who can very easily get carried away but he was headed off with plenty of cuddles. He coped well with seeing all the staff as well, including the woman who used to reverse his name as a joke. She asked him if he remembered what her name is backwards, and he did, and then her boyfriend, who does handywork around the school walked by. “What’s his name?” she said, and there was a pause. “You can’t have already forgotten my name!” he said, just as Small said “notram” and I explained he was trying to work it out backwards. And he got pretty close too 🙂

We waited in the children’s house for a while, and Small found a display of minerals, in rock form and as tumbled stone. There was a book on display with them, and he spent ages, looking up crystals and trying to identify them in the book. He did pretty well with that too 🙂

Big has spent her day when not at school with her nose buried in Harry Potter. She’s up to page 182 tonight, and very pleased with herself. She really enjoyed seeing some of her friends at school, but I think is realising every time we pop in that she is ready to move on. She said today that she thinks she might like to join the swimming club when we move, as it would probably be a good way to make friends as well as learning to swim. We need to see if there are waiting lists for Brownies too, and I’ve promised her home ed groups as well.

I made it down to old house eventually, more this evening than this afternoon, but Kirsty came over to help and we worked our way through 4 black bags of all that stuff you don’t know what to do with, and got it down to just a couple boxes to keep, with yet another black bag for the bin, and more for the charity shop. Do charity shops collect? We’ve got quite a serious pile there already. Need to start doing similarly here too, but I think tomorrow is soon enough.

  1. Re Brownies, assuming she is still nominally attached to the local unit, speak to the Brown Owl about it, there is a transfer process. Basically once you are a member you have more “right” to a place than girls still on the waiting list so she should be able to transfer to a pack in the new area fairly smoothly.
Some charity shops will collect if you have a lot of stuff, but not many.

  2. We’ve had charities collect stuff from us in the past.

  3. Ah, so it would be a good idea for her to go to Brownies after all? She hasn’t been back this term – I forgot the first couple of weeks, and then we were away last week. Will they let her back after missing three in a row without so much as a word (kept meaning to email the Brown Owl, but can’t find her email address either.)
