feeling a little better

so thank you all for the good wishes.

I mean, I was out of bed before 10! 😉 Did manage to keep going last night until bedtime – finally caved and went up just before 10 last night. Would have been earlier but Small fell asleep after a teatime feed, and that boosted his energy levels just that little bit.

Still haven’t felt up to leaving the house, but managed to sort out Small’s clothing drawer as well as some other bits upstairs, and then do a bit of tidying down here, and got dd her Cuisenaire rods out as well, so what do you know, we did education!

On that theme, I’m fascinated by how she plays with them. I love patterns – patterns in number, or size or colour, so what I do with Cuisenaire rods or pattern blocks is make patterns. She builds “a pretty garden fence” and then pretends that some of them are ppl and plays imaginary games with them. I’m not saying that that is wrong, but when dp asked her to pass him one of each, it developed into a full scale drama – she really struggled to do it, and when I very gently suggested ways of checking what she was doing, she lost it completely. Very odd. Anyone else out there care to share how their children play with the rods? I really do find it very interesting.

And that is about it for the day so far. We’re in the run up to bathtime so I’m just snatching a quick ten minutes to update before I hustle them upstairs and clean them. I’m hoping for another reasonably early night – depends on whether I keep Small awake for a little while after his bath I suspect. If I can push him through until 8ish he might sleep more or less through (with the obligatory half dozen feeds of course).

  1. C plays roleplaying games with any object I give her for sorting – buttons, shells, cuis. rods. I remember making patterns with the rods when we had them at school but I was 7 or 8 then, perhaps the roleplaying thing has died down a bit by that age. She does use them for maths too, if they are required for something we’re doing, but just playing, they are a family going on an adventure

  2. Abbie makes patterns and lines them up, but Anna makes pictures 🙂 Joe does a bit of both, at the moment! Glad you’re feeling a bit better.

  3. We have a mixture of pictures and patterns here, with all the children. Elijah likes to copy, either something I’ve made, or an outline picture (as in the pdf leaflet linked to from mudpud – except I keep losing it!). Poppy does have a penchant for steps too. (She has made hama bead copies of cuisensaire steps …..)
