Caught up just to fall behind again!

Can’t believe that I finally managed to clear all the draft posts only to instantly fall a week behind again!

I’m not going to try to reconstruct day by day, just quickly fill in some notable occurences, and will have to add pictures later as they’re on the wrong machine and I can’t access them over the network from here 🙁

Let’s see. I know we had a find the library book day and made it to the library, where Small is now on a strict limit of one children’s book at a time. This is following him having books classed as non childrens, losing them in his room, and fines amassing at 10p a day. (Yes, I could have renewed them online, in fact I was sure I had, but obviously I hadn’t 🙁 )

So he settled on Hiccup: How to Train Your Dragon which he’s actually read some chapters of before losing interest in reading again. Which has wound Big up something drastic as she wanted to read it and he won’t let her til he’s finished 😉

She couldn’t find what she wanted to read at the library, as she wanted Are You There, God? It’s Me, Margaret and it wasn’t in stock. Managed to satisfy her for a day with Travellers by Night which she really enjoyed. Chalk one up to the charity shops there then 😉

There has been mathletics usage, which is good – it had gone out of fashion for a few weeks, but Big particularly has been persevering and showing real progress. Come to a bit of a halt on simplifying fractions today, but we had an extra session while I was cooking tea and I’m hoping that tomorrow it will start to sink in. She’s managed to overtake Small again, though I don’t know how long that will last – just at the moment he isn’t mathematically inclined, instead being busy being artistic and literary all at once.

He has been occupying himself with digital artwork on paint.net and last night Tim showed him Adobe Photoshop Elements 7. He seemed to enjoy that, and he’s barely been off the machine all day today. He’s written a fantastic story today, didn’t know he had it in him. It even has special effects within the text – colour, bold, italics and different fonts so it’s visually impressive as well.

He just keeps on surprising us. At Beavers this week they had an artist come in to do cartooning with them, and Squirrel came up to me at the end to tell me that his artwork is exceptional and that even the cartoonist had remarked on it. And all still done with his pencil held in a fist grip. He really is quite something.

soa is coming along nicely. She’s taking to solids pretty well – mainly whatever we are having mashed up with a fork. I don’t put salt in when I’m preparing veg so I don’t need to worry about that, and as I’m trying to make sure I get a good variety of fruit and veg, what with the whole vegetarian thing going on, there’s plenty of choice for her. So far there hasn’t been anything she’s turned down, which is pretty good going. She did put me through it at the weekend though, when she decided to withhold poo for four days, which only started to worry me when she started to show signs of discomfort on Sunday. We had a day of occasional crying and straining and eventual production of a small hard poo (sorry for the tmi!) but once that occurred, every nappy for 24 hours was dirty. Which was nice.

Today she decided to get a bit more mobile – obviously when she was nappy free. She rolled herself to the cupboard under the tv, opened the door and took out a dvd! 😯 Guess those doors need to be properly shut now then 😉

Other than that, she’s a pretty easy baby. I think she just enjoys life, plenty of attention, being carried and food. Tonight’s potato and broccoli, followed by grapes and then fromage frais seemed to go down extremely well.

Today we had another library trip, though without Small (as noted he was busy on the computer) – quite nice to go out just girls together. Fabulous weather. Which reminds me of yesterday, when we had our usual afk weds – samba band in the morning, followed by home ed group with tie dye and felting in the afternoon. I think that makes us an official home ed group now.

And I do have pictures, but like I say, they will have to come later.

And now, it’s bedtime.

you may like to read that “are you there god” book before letting Big read it.
I am convinced the online renewal system doesn’t always work.

  2. I think I have read it, but a very long time ago. She’s already 99 pages in, there’s only 151 pages anyway. What should I be looking out for?

  3. Oh, and I agree with you on the online renewal thing. Was absolutely sure I’d renewed everything 🙁

  4. You got it then? Was going to offer ours. I love Judy Blume 🙂 Nothing in AYTGIMM that I would worry about any of my 10 year olds reading – I certainly wasn’t over 10 when I read it.

  5. Got it and she’s finished it 🙂 She really enjoyed it and we’ve had a good chat about it too.

I think I need to re read it. From memory I think C isn’t ready for it for a couple of years.

  7. If C isn’t showing any interest in the puberty type questions she prob wouldn’t enjoy it yet from what Big said. (I’m planning to read it tonight to satisfy my curiosity and check whether I have already read it!)

  8. We read all of Judy Blumes when we were young in the States. Loved that-and all the books! It’s based on a 6th grader-which is 10-11yr olds.
