Breaking the chains of habit.

There has been a post on this blog daily since beginning of December last year. Until yesterday. Yesterday I took Smallest to bed around 10pm, and by the time I finally got her to sleep, probably 30 or 40 minutes later I was too warm and sleepy to consider getting up to post what would have been a load of waffle on the blog. So I didn’t, even though it bugged me that I was going to miss a day.

And yes, it’s probably partly why I’m now awake at 4am. Thanks subconscious. Smallest is now sleeping through up to 8 hours, but you’d rather wake up and worry about pointless habits.

As experiments go, I’d have to say that trying to post daily hasn’t been that good for me. Too often it’s meant that ideas I could have fleshed out over a couple of days and possibly made into quality posts have been pushed aside by the requirement to get something, anything, on to that blank page and posted before midnight. I’m not sure whether readers would agree (I’d love your opinions on it actually, usual place below 😉 ) but I think, overall, in this case quantity has diminished quantity. That said, expect a splurge of posts over the next few days as I think I’ve finally demolished the odd form of writer’s block I’ve been experiencing, which has been related to that get something out by midnight idea.

It has however meant more photos. There have been quite a few days when I haven’t had the time or energy for words, so I’ve ‘cheated’ with a photo. That could have been an option last night in fact, but I was too warm and cosy and half asleep to even go and find my phone and show you the hedgehog. (Yes, we have a hedgehog. Well, we feed a hedgehog. They don’t like dog food, did you know that? Not even the premium quality dried stuff. Obviously they know it’s half the price of cat biscuits, little spikey monsters. Anyone want a barely touched bag of premium Lidl dried dogfood?) Ahem. More photos I think are generally a good thing, so although I’ve heard a rumour that SilentSunday will be linky-less from now on, I think I’ll try to keep up with that habit, and also maybe a few more of other children, as there is rather a preponderance of pics of the Smallest and her incredible cuteness. (I’m biased. I know. Tough.)

So there you go. Expect both fewer and more posts, and while the odds are I’ll still post most days, I’m no longer going to force myself to post everyday. Even though it’s really really bugging me that I didn’t make a year. Sigh.

  1. I’ve loved seeing so many pics of your gorgeous girls and of Small too. (and fab that Smallest has got the hang of sleeping!)
I think sometimes stream of conciousness type writing can be very good for helping you switch off at night and , as a bit of a people watcher, I find it interesting to see what rattles through the heads of friends so it’s been lovely to have something to read from you so often! How about saving important stuff to draft so that you can let it develop over a day or two before unleashing it on the world if that would make you feel that you were creating a better product?

  2. I’ve been trying to post daily on my blog http://www.fivekidsandcounting.blogspot.com and on Tuesday didn’t blog as it was first day back to homeschool but I was left with a that nagging I need to get round to doing something feeling which was really annoying 🙂

  3. I am not sure about the quality/quantity thing. I think I would rather read less. I just think that sometimes posts can be a noneness and I do like to comment when I have read, just so you know I am reading (if that makes sense), but do not want to leave a hollow comment. But…………. this is your blog and not a product and I would read even if you didn’t have a USP

  4. I have another space for a daily photo but don’t always make it! I do post for the day though. As for you Miss, it’s your space & no-one will tell you off!

  5. I’ve stopped posting daily, people don’t seem to like it really. I mean honestly, who is interesting enough to post every day? Not me! But I do a photo a day on my other blog; I like that but it is FOR ME.
I tend to return comments, as I like going somewhere new. I give up on a blog that never returns interest unless it is amazingly brilliant but i do that because I like relationships.
Allegedly, 3-4 posts a week is good.
