Been a long day

Sounds like it ought to be a song.

Anyway. Hauled myself out of bed before nine this morning, with some determination that I would spend quality time with the children. And I did – it was variable, but there were some good patches.

Big read a red nose reader story this morning – they seem pretty good. And the library had quite a few of them, so we can work our way through them when we run out of ladybirds. I offered Maths, and she said she didn’t feel like it, which seems to be the latest ploy. Well, that’s OK, but she’d better not complain that she doesn’t feel she’s learning enough! She did spent quite a bit of time playing with the IQ puzzles when they came out though, as did Small.

I went to hang the washing out and discovered that it was raining, so I gave up on that idea and took the children out on their bikes instead. Well, it wasn’t raining much, just a little dampness in the air really, but seemed silly to hang out washing in it 😉

Most of the afternoon was spent pleasantly, more playing, and then I found The Sword in the Stone on. I’d told Big the arthur story a little while ago, so she was thrilled by the film and sat absolutely engrossed. Small was a bit disappointed, as I had to switch the football off to put the film on – what’s that about then? Why is he interested in football on the tv???

His big new trick of the last couple of days is to discover that he can reach door handles and open doors, even ones he has to pull open. Oh dear. So we’ve to make sure we’ve got the front door locked – if he gets half a chance he belts off down the drive and it leads out onto the road fairly promptly. Yurg.

Unfortunately, the day didn’t end well. As I’ve taken to doing, I turned the tv off as I served dinner, and Big went into a full scale screaming meltdown. The tantrums are getting far worse – she screams, stamps, slams doors and refuses to cooperate at all. Then two minutes later she just wants to say sorry and get on with whatever it was – and I don’t really feel that’s acceptable. Or maybe I should just be ignoring it – difficult with this headache though.

Not going to think about it any more tonight though, taking the headache to bed.

Oh, and I finished another crochet square…I think that makes about 13 finished, but I’ve got the inner section for another 5 here, so I might catch up with the number I’ve been sent by the end of the weekend…

  1. I’d ignore the tantrum if she sorts herself out and just make a comment like ‘oh good you’ve sorted yourself out- carrots?’
Buzz has loved footie on the telly for yonks! The girls did when they were little but don’t now. He does though and can’t wait until he is five and can join a club LOL! Joyous Sunday mornings on the side line. I think it is highly entertaining for a tot.

  2. Lyddie likes football on the telly too, worst luck. I hate it! Can’t even bear the noise from the next room! And I’d ignore the tantrum too, personally, or just give her a hug & then get on with tea.

  3. I know they’re different ages but I’m having major tantrums from Titch atm and have I woken up this morning utterly resolved to totally ignore them and so far it’s 2-0 to me 😉
Pip throws tantrums but they’re sophisticated big kid ones where she just sulks and says she’s ‘fine’. Avoid and ignore are the best tactics and have always been successful in the past for me, I just forget sometimes and let it wind me up.
Big’s reading is leaping on, bravo!

  4. Tantrums fall into two catagories here, based on a completely arbitrary system that relies mainly on how I’m feeling at the time. Either they’re ignored (and also, possibly laughed at, depending on how ludicrous the cause of said tantrum is), or D is sent to sit on the stairs. Luckily, tantrums are few and far between, atm. It’s the mouthy back answering and sulking I can’t bear. T’s tantrums are a totally different thing. I can’t even begin to understand them, let alone respond to them!
Have just ordered Red Nose Readers for D from the Book People. 🙂 And we do like this StudyDog!

  5. I think i’d go for ignore them and praise the recovery. There isn’t much motivation for stopping if you get told off when you do i suppose.

  6. We have some red nose readers- red, yellow and blue. Theyre quite bearable, arent they? Jem decided she was going to teach fugs to read with them the other day, and they both had fun, although he was obviously guessing the words- I think this is part of the process and builds confidence.
She was still having terrible tantrums at 5, and I decided it was partly food related- she would go hypo very easily, which I could relate to being either breatfeeding or pregnant (or both). I thought she was diabetic at one point, but I think she was just being her. I just had to give her snacks more often, which went against my philosophy of proper, regular meals- she obviously needed to be a grazer and it worked, to some extent. now I am more sensitive to the fact that sometimes its just hunger.
