Are there any female conservatives?

Tories ponder baby nurses for all

Tory leader David Cameron has asked shadow children’s secretary Michael Gove and shadow health secretary Andrew Lansley to travel to the Netherland to observe the scheme in action and consider its applicability to the UK.

Wouldn’t it be sensible to send someone who has some experience of maternity services in this country already? Only I can’t help feeling that in so many cases politicians make decisions on areas they have absolutely no knowledge, either first hand, or imparted, about. Thus the decisions about school curriculums which don’t take into account the realities that teachers are facing or any educational research (except for the occasional bit they like the sound of).

  1. and it is so totally pointless!

  2. Rofl, i think they may have got confused about the concept of “the nanny state!”
I’m not sure whether i’d hate it first time round, i certainly would have beyond that. That said, the ex-midwife/reflexologist who came round and debriefed on Josie’s birth was helpful.
Oh well, not worth worrying about, they won’t be able to afford it or find the people to do it anyway!

  3. It would have been a lifesaver first time round for me – stuck in a bed upstairs, unable to answer the door to the GP who then decided I was out rather than merely incapacitated. As it was, Tim left me food on the side, the midwives learned to let themselves in and my dad and Christine drove from Hudds to Sheffield two days running to do things like ironing (not that I ever did any ironing before I had Big, but it’s the thought that counts 😉 )
I agree that they’ll never manage to fund or staff it though.

I like the bit about making sure there aren’t too many visitors to disturb mother’s rest…. I have this image of a Hatty Jaques-esqe figure at teh door arms crossed saying “I don’t care if you are her mother, she’s confinded to bed with Baby for the first week and you aren’t coming in!”
