Another Family Film Night – with Crocodile dundee

Today I have been stretching my brain, and almost remembering what it’s like to work for a living. I’ve been poking at a problem or two on and off for weeks now, and today I sat down and spent several hours at it. It felt good to tussle with something other than what was for tea, if a little disheartening at how long it took me to get my head round what should be simple concepts. But there you go.

And then I put it all away, put pizza dough on, made popcorn (twice, burnt the first lot, sigh) and we sat down as a family to watch Crocodile Dundee.

It was not a resounding success. In fact, Small boycotted it after about 20 minutes and returned to his computer, which I found slightly upsetting. Tim and I decided we need to plan this a little more carefully and possibly splash out £1 or so a week getting a film from Blockbuster that will suit us all instead of relying on there being something we can record during the week. Big however thought it was hilarious, so at least some part of the family was happy. There’s a little bad language that I’d forgotten, but nothing too OTT, though I’d definitely censored the somewhat high cut swimming costume from my mind since last watching it! If either of those is an issue for you, you may want to skip this for now. There’s also a variety of slightly odd situations around prostitutes, some violence (though nothing compared to your standard superhero movie) and a bit of waving around of large knives. Mostly though, it’s just funny.

(Smallest was just being adorable, irritating and bouncy throughout. I think she enjoys having all of us there to pester, and I know she loves the popcorn. The flickering images are of little interest as they don’t feature Noddy, Bob or Mike the Knight 😉 )

And then Big and I put together pizza – it works so much better when she helps. And I found some measure of achievement in washing up while it cooked, doing it mindfully, as described in the link Tech left on the previous post. (Who’d have thought that experiencing a sponge in water could make washing up more interesting? But it did. To the extent that I even turned the radio off so I could experience it better.) The meal was finished off with the second half of reduced price chocolate brownie pudding (gotta love the reduced shelf at the local coop) and icecream.

Children into bed, Smallest asleep before ten! and older two listening to Hitchhiker’s guide. We’re trying to wean Big off endless repeats of Harry Potter – there’s only so much Stephen Fry I can take. And then I’ve done a little more work and now to bed myself I think.

Film recommendations as always gratefully accepted 🙂 Given up on the linky as no one was linking…

  1. We loved “Night at the Museum” as a family film as it was pure fun. “The Mighty” was also a great family film but it is a tearjerker. It really moved my lot.
Generally though we like TV series as we can fit them in (and stay awake more easily!). “Hornblower” and “Merlin” are our current favourites…

  2. trying to think of films that have floated the family boat here….
Last of the Airbenders was good but left irritatingly mid-story (I assume there are supposed to be sequels)
Spy Next Door was funny and has been regularly watched now for over a year
Nanny McPhee is a big hit here, as is the sequel
Aprilia liked Spy Kids but it did very little for us
The newer Alice film (the one with Johnny Depp) is a particular fave of Apilia’s and is very watchable but a bit freeky in places
Anything with the words Harry and Potter in the title are instant hits, I think it’s one of the saving graces of DVDs as they don’t wear out like tapes used to….. would cost us a fortune otherwise!
    Any of those any good?

  3. narnia films, we all liked megamind and despicable me 🙂 i loved how to train your dragon, but think most kids might have watched it too often at camp! yep to the nanny macphee duo, 2 more than 1. pirates of the caribbean 1, back to the future eries – thik you might have watched these?

  4. I must say that I rather envy those who can come up with a film to please all the family – that seems to have been lost as mine get older because tastes vary so much. (I can second Night at the Museum, though.) Both mine do like Austin Powers! Maybe a bit too rude for little ones though. Comedy in general will bring everyone together in my house – classics like Fawlty Towers and The Good Life and newer things like Miranda and Gavin and Stacey. Stand up – Eddie Izzard pleases all – is great too. But I think I am probably far more comfortable with swearing and references to sex than many other parents so might not work for others.

  5. Glad it helped 😀
