A walk in the woods

Nature detectives were running a photography competition for kids that ended this week. As it’s kind of my habit to do things at the last minute, last weekend saw us on a family trip to the local woods. Sadly, it rained.

It rained rather a lot actually. Mainly during the 30 minutes we were under the trees, which meant we didn’t really get many decent photos. So having checked precisely when the finishing time was, we went back to the woods yesterday, and took more pictures.

These are mine – the kids’ comp entries are uploaded into the competition group 🙂

gateway to adventure

We were looking for a very special tree…and this time we found it.

Along the way we dodged dogs, crossed bridges, exclaimed at puddles and occasionally took pictures.

It was a good walk. Apart from the dogs. I have nothing against dogs, I really rather like them, but I don’t enjoy having a child nearly as big as me trying to climb inside the wrap with the baby because there’s a pack of dogs hurtling towards her out of control. And yes, I do describe 5 dogs as a pack. And I don’t like being ignored by the owners when I call for them to be called back. Humph. But there was no real harm done, and we made it home past this little beauty

in time for half a cup of tea before I headed out with Big and smallest to get Big to rookie lifeguard. Given that I’d run that morning (over a mile) as well, it was a fairly active day!

And if it hadn’t been for the disastrous not meal, it would have been a great day 🙁 But what should have been great ended with me crashing back down to earth when the cauliflower cheese and roast potatoes didn’t cook – whether through my incompetence or because the oven malfunctioned I don’t know. And it didn’t make much difference either way given the end result was hungry children sitting at an empty table. So the kids ended up with reheated baked potatoes and beans, Tim scrabbled together cold meats, beans and bread and I had a fried egg sandwich. Oh well. At least we have back up food available!
