A home ed day out.

Which actually started last night when we drove to swimming, then on to our friend Helen’s house for the evening.

Before we get on to today though, I ought to give a quick mention to my latest swimming related pmm (that’s a proud mummy moment in case you’re wondering). I’ve had lots related to Big recently – she’s just going from strength to strength with the swimming, in lessons, lifeguards and swim club. But last night it was Small’s turn to shine – he was sent for a second assessment with another teacher, and it was confirmed that he’s ready to move up a group. He’s passed his Level 3 and next week will be wearing a blue hat. And wonder of wonders, their lessons will be at the same time! I think that did happen for a little while when they first started, but not for long…

Anyways, as previously mentioned we then went on to Helen’s. This was so that we could get an early start this morning and go in to Cambridge for the day, for a tour around part of a rather fabulous museum full of casts of Greek statues. The tour guide/ tutor was fabulous, and the children all had a great time. I didn’t get to listen to all that much of what she had to say as Smallest didn’t want to sit and listen for very long at a time, but what I did hear was good. I never knew that Greek statues were painted.

From there we went on to sit on a picnic bench and eat a packed lunch – Katy, Zoe and I popped in to the buttery to buy very reasonably priced fairtrade hot drinks, and when we came out, it was to see out group disappearing into a lecture hall. Despite the signs saying no eating/ drinking, we’d been invited in out of the cold to finish our picnic 🙂

The second scheduled event of the day was a rather fabulous schools concert. It was the children’s first experience of a live orchestra, sweetened rather by renditions of Harry Potter, ET and Star Wars theme tunes. Even Smallest got to listen, as we were invited to take the littlies in given that there were seats unfilled. She didn’t cope with the full programme, but she managed half an hour and I thought that was pretty good.

From there, via a quick route march back to the car we retired to Helen’s for the obligatory cuppa before returning home just in time for Big to gobble some cereal before going out to an evening of old fashioned crafts at Guides. Honestly. There’s an attractive way to introduce sewing, knitting and so on. Or is it just me, and actually that shows how fabulous they are?

And now I’m waiting for the baby to get tired, so that I can go to bed…
