Wot, no twitter?

Picture a lost and lonely chad peering over the twitter wall…

I read the forbes article on the #twitterblackout, and thought, yes, censorship is bad, must help send a message to twitter. So I blogged a quick mention, tweeted a couple of times, and then shut myself down. Twitching.

This morning, I couldn’t resist a peek, though I didn’t tweet. I did see a couple of ppl share a new perspective, thinking that the new policy is actually good for activists as it’s completely transparent and hidden tweets are only hidden within the originating country.

Hm, I’m still not sure. And overall I decided that if I’m so addicted to twitter the idea of a day off sets me twitching (and peeking from behind the curtains) a day off is precisely what I need. So I’m still (sort of) supporting the #twitterblackout – at the very least it raises awareness of the issues, and discussion is good. I’m not ignoring you on there today – I’m testing my self control 😉

In completely unrelated news, I seem to have been quite productive so far today. It’s not even lunchtime and I’m dressed, showered, slathered in the lovely new Palmers massage lotion for stretch marks I was given yesterday (apparently I smell nice, says Big, and I certainly feel nicely pampered 😉 ), I’ve breakfasted, done a load of washing and spread it to dry around the house, and I’m fighting again with the loan iphone trying to recover the photos and videos I took so I can send it back.

Honestly, I know that ppl love these devices – I can’t see why. I’ve tried syncing the thing and I can’t see where in itunes it hides the pics or vids, if it does pull them off at all. I’m now trying to clear them off using the Windows Scanner and Camera thingummy as recommended on apple’s site, and that isn’t working either. So far it’s been at it over 40 minutes and has managed to copy across 6 items out of 35. I have *never* had any problems getting things of any of the Nokia or Android phones I’ve reviewed or used.

As well as that, I’ve sorted out a voucher from topcashback so that I can order a couple of things from Amazon (a book for Big to review so that she can enter a reviewing competition, and a replacement relaxation CD for me to listen to in the hope I can boost my self hypnosis skills before birth). I love topcashback. They’ve put their referral fees up to £10, so if you join through my link I get £10 bonus when you’ve earned £5 (I think. Don’t know whether they’ve put that threshold up along with the referral bonus and can’t seem to find that info.) and you get an extra 5% on payout if you take it in Amazon vouchers. I use it against things like train tickets via the trainline, and spending at Baker Ross 😉 all mounts up!

And that’s about it for the day so far. Next task is to do some tidying and gather together all the books we’ve got for Our Year in Books so far (a disturbing amount. But there are 4 of us taking part.) And then I need to think about food and shopping, and maybe a lie down with my feet up at some stage. (And a book. Or three. As I seem to have a slightly ridiculous stash!)

And I want to work through my emails and draw myself up a task list – have started that a bit, and maybe take some more bits down to the charity shop, and perhaps work on several blog posts for several blogs, and I’d love to do some crafting and…

aren’t there a lot of hours in the day without twitter?

  1. think that Apple products are over rated generally unless you go the whole hog and go completely Mac then (I am told, by a massive Mac enthusiast) everything syncs seamlessly and effortlessly. I’ll stick with my Samsung.
Have you tried depositing all your pics/vids etc into DropBox (there should be an app for that) and then retrieving on the PC?

  2. I agree- apple all the way probably makes everything simple.
My iPhone syncs photos to iPhoto not iTunes – perhaps you’re looking on the wrong place? I don’t know what a PC does with an iPhone though so don’t want to make incorrect assumptions! I love my iPhone though 🙂

    1. Um, I don’t think I’ve got iPhoto installed – maybe I should have? In the end I gave up on all the articles I’d read telling me to sync or back up or use Windows scanner and camera wizard, and headed for Windows explorer. That opened directly on to the vids and photos and I was able to copy all then delete them. Wish I’d tried that in the first place. Have no idea of course whether they are in a format I can work with, but I can cross that bridge later 😉

  3. Hi. It’s lovely to discover your blog and thanks for commenting on mine. I so agree with you about Twitter. It is utterly addictive and if I didn’t keep sneaking a quick look at it I’d get so much more done. I reckon I could have written a whole novel in the time I’ve wasted on Twitter.

    1. One of these years I must try that…

  4. I am totally mac’d up so have no problems syncing, but have heard it’s not so easy when you’re using both OS and Windows…. but I have no idea.
Im with you on the twitter thing. the counter argument just doesnt quite sway it for me as I dont believe in any censorship…. and as for legalities in one country to another, then we have a whole new discussion to have about dictatorships and the like. I abstained until Midnight….

    1. Yeah, I made it to midnight. Just. Several times during the day absentmindedly opened it on my phone but remembered before I tweeted!

  5. I didn’t realise there was an official Twitter blackout thing, that’s quite interesting really. It does take up so much time in a day doesn’t it. (stares at own feet).
I loved my iPhone I have to say! (before I lost it…)

    1. Drawback to twitterblackout is not being able to use twitter to publicise it…

  6. The Twitter blackout seems to have been a well-kept secret unless you read the social media news. Of course, such direct action is doomed to fail in my view. When the websites themselves protest (as they did the other week) people take notice. A protest against a giant like Twitter is like using a pea shooter against a battleship.

I think Twitter’s problem is that they’re opening offices in more countries. Once they do that, they *have* to comply with local laws or those staff could end up in jail. What they’ve done is far and away better than every other Internet company (Yahoo, Google, FaceBook etc) which *already* *censor* *things*, but importantly are doing it *silently*. Twitter will make it very obvious that tweets are being blocked and who by.
I spent two weeks over new year with no twitter – I was just too ill. I felt a bit lost and out of the loop when I came back, having relied on TV and newspaper for news (mostly it was MSM catching up with what I’d already learned from twitter in the weeks before).
As for your iPhone photo issue, iTunes has nothing to do with getting your pictures *off* the phone. The iPhone just appears as a standard digital camera so you use whatever software you normally use with a digital camera. On a Mac, that’s iPhoto (or Aperture). On Windows it could be absolutely anything depending on whether you have XP, Vista or W7 and whether you installed any of that software bundled with another camera. Nobody else can help you – only you know what software you’ve got.
Except of course now you wouldn’t even have to do that. On your iPhone you turn on iCloud and your pictures/movies all get wirelessly synced to your computers via Photostream.
