when you leave your laptop switched off 🙂
It’s still switched off. I’m borrowing Tim’s machine, while he’s out shopping and the grots are bathing. I’ve really enjoyed the freedom, haven’t felt that the day got away from me at all. Well, apart from the first hour or so I spent sleeping after the grots got up 😉
Once I went down and had copious cups of tea and breakfast, we got started catching up on the Christmas presents we didn’t finish before Christmas 😳 This year I need to be more prepared – maybe start around June sometime! Anyway, we did 90% of the two large memory boards we’d got left to do – I just need to sew the buttons on the last one now. Stopped doing that because my finger was hurting pushing the needle through the canvas. (Tim suggested I use a thimble, he could be right.)
With loads of craft stuff out, it wasn’t that surprising that that was what Big continued with – scavenging some of the fleece we were using to pad the boards to make doll pillows and blankets. Rather impressed at how self organising she is with that – she made a couple of lovely little things.
Somewhere in between all that, I’d done washing up and washing as well – and Big chose to sort out her clothes drawers, took everything out, dusted the drawers, folded everything up and put it all away again. Sometimes I wonder if she’s really related to me 😉 Small pottered on doing whatever it was that came to mind – he is pretty self entertaining most of the time too.
Early afternoon the phone rang, that would be Kirsty having seen the blogpost 🙂 She gathered up her offspring and came round, just missing the end of Small’s first ever knitting lesson. I’d bought him a kit in the works – £2.99 I think for really chunky needles and lovely multicoloured chunky wool. He’d been asking for a couple of days to try it, and when Kirsty was here last night I got her to talk me through how to cast on properly. He did a whole row, granted with me holding his hands as well, but I was just impressed he sat for as long as he did, and he seemed very pleased to have tried.
Then we got Kirsty, M and A round, and they carried on the crafting theme, as M had brought some wooden car kit and A had her french knitting with her. I gave a french knitting lesson to Kirsty and A, having scratched my head over the instructions in the kit, I just did it the way I always do. Then I did quite a bit of bead threading so that I could get started on another little project 😉 That book mother got me really is excellent!
The kids played with playdough and watched Cars – while we adults chatted and drank tea. And crocheted 😉
And that pretty much brings us up to date. Kirsty cleared off, I gave me two tea, and now they’re in the bath, throwing water at each other. Oh, Big wrote in her diary before bath time. Got that so that she can take it to and fro school so we can coordinate efforts, or at the very least avoid duplication.
Not sure that we need to worry overly much about her development atm. Her reading has really taken off – it takes about an hour for her to read a fairy book now, and she reads one most evenings. I’ve stopped requiring reading as she’s doing fine now. Doing craft it became apparent that basic arithmetic is kicking in nicely – questions like “you’ve 10 roses, how many can you put on each board?” got snap answers (yes, I know 10 / 2 isn’t tough, but it was the first time I’ve seen her answer anything like that without having to think about it). She is also beginning to get how to plan her project ahead, and she’s getting better at working her way through mistakes.
Small is doing fine now too – his vocabulary is off the scale, and I’ve noticed that he’s cracked counting properly. He’s very into shapes – he spotted diamonds on the memory boards, and then came over to count how many. He bounces a lot – it’s slightly disconcerting when you’re having a conversation to have him all over the room, but I’m sure it’s nothing to worry about. Even when it gives me a headache 😉
Right, must go and drag them out of the bath – need to reclaim the living room, and then I need to hook up the laptop as I’ve several bits to get to grips with this weekend. Good to have a day though – must try to do that more often.
ps have added piccie of shawl to relevant post 🙂
