Watercolour exploration

Our 300 picture book read the other night was The Tiniest Mermaid ( amazon link), which is a gentle tale of friendship, made particularly attractive by the inclusion of glowing scales.

I don’t have the scales. But I studied the pictures for a while and then came up with this.

It’s also influenced by the picture of Smallest, as I hope you can tell. And is easily the most comfortable I’ve felt using watercolours. I did struggle a little – the small Cotman Sketcher’s pocket box ( amazon link) I’m using is quite limited in its range of colours, doesn’t even have a black.

But I improvised, and I was quite pleased with the end result.

Amazing what you can learn from picture books isn’t it?

  1. Beautiful, I wish I was artistically talented but it was never to be for me!
