The Green Chain – blog interview for charity.

A little while ago PriceMinister launched a charitising campaign – The Green Chain – for bloggers to raise money for charity, and I was tagged by Super Lucky Di. If you take part in their eco interview, they will donate £10 to one of three great environmental charities – Surfers Against Sewage, Trees for Cities and the Young People’s Trust for the Environment. If you tweet or join the Green Chain Facebook page as well as blogging, PriceMinister will donate an extra £1 for each. You can read all about The Green Chain and how to take part here. And now my interview… read to the end to see if I’ve tagged you!

Turning the heating down by just one degree in your house saves 240kg of CO2 a year. It would take eight trees to soak up this amount of CO2! Are you currently doing anything to make your home eco-friendly?

We are looking into solar energy – the house isn’t currently eco friendly in that the only way to have hot water is to run the central heating, so in the summer we end up with the heating on for an hour just so we can have hot water for washing up and Smallest’s bath. Not ideal, and certainly not how we want to live in the long run.

Rainforests once covered 14% of the earth’s land surface, now they only cover 2%. How are you reducing your use of paper?

We recycle all paper that we possibly can, don’t buy newspapers or magazines, and reuse envelopes etc. I use emails rather than letters where possible, and I never print anything out.

At PriceMinister we believe that trading second hand items online is a great way to extend the life span of products. Have you ever thought of buying or selling second hand items on or off line?

Yup, and I’ve done it. I’ve ebayed, sold second hand books on Amazon, bought from a variety of places secondhand, and I’ll continue to do so. I also freegle things that we can’t sell, or send them to charity shops.

One of the biggest environmental challenges we face is Freshwater Shortages. Are you taking measures to reduce your water consumption?

Yes. And very topical atm with the distinct lack of rainfall! We have three water butts rigged up in the garden, and wherever possible I also carry out grey water like washing up water or baby bath water and that goes on the plants as well. The rest of us shower rather than bath (we don’t even have a bath) and the children stay reasonably clean by showering at the leisure centre four times a week after swimming – does that count as saving water?

How do you choose the produce that goes into your shopping basket?

Local and seasonal – I like that our coop marks up where things are from, although where possible I do like to use our greengrocer too.

What is your favourite green space near home

There’s a little wood walking distance from us and I really enjoy going and exploring it with the children, particularly looking for the magic faraway tree 🙂

Which charity will you support and why?

I’m choosing surfers against sewage because I think it’s really important that we take care of the sea – it’s not going to be an easy thing to fix otherwise.

Please give us the url of a fellow blogger (or bloggers) you would like us to contact to raise an extra £10.

Donna from Mummy Central, Susan K Mann and Emma from Adventures of an English Mum, and due to my levels of confusion at unearthly hours of the morning, also EnglishMum 🙂

  1. Oh how cool! Will try and do it next week x

  2. “Rainforests once covered 14% of the earth¡Çs land surface, now they only cover 2%. How are you reducing your use of paper?”
Most of the rain forest has been cut and burned to make farm land vs to make paper. Reducing the use of paper is a good environmental move but it won’t help save the rain forests.

    1. Hi Ron,
Thanks for that comment about the rainforests. We would love to see your eco-interview on http://atypicalhomeschool.net/

      1. Thanks for dropping by Oliver, I’ve passed your comment on to Ron.

  3. Cool questions – much more interesting than those Guardien Q&As that have been doing the rounds. And more helpful.
