The Fellowship of the Ring – Family Film Night

Grotty dull day here yesterday – it barely seemed to get light. I managed to get a bit more tidying done, which had the adverse side affect of clearing a path to the craft shelves, so I then spent lots of time removing unsuitable craft items from the toddler. Going to have to do some serious rearranging I think.

Watching a film together was something I’d been looking forward to, but we struggled to settle on anything that everyone wanted to watch. I didn’t fancy Flubber, neither Tim or I fancied Alvin and the Chipmunks, and Small didn’t like the look of the Princess Bride. Then Tim suggested one of the The Lord of the Rings Trilogy

that we’ve had sitting in the cupboard for years unwatched and we decided to give it a go, starting with the Fellowship of the Ring.

It wasn’t precisely a hit. I’m the only one who is really familiar with the stories – I think I first read them when I was around 12, and then yearly for a while after that. Tim listened to them as audio books when commuting to Birmingham over a decade ago and neither of the children have read them at all. I think we tried them on the Hobbit a while back and it didn’t go well. Tonight the film didn’t really do it for them – I found I was having to explain rather too much of the plot and who various ppl were for me to be able to just settle in and watch as well.

Discussing on twitter afterwards I did hear some negative opinions from others who hadn’t read them. Basically three hours of ppl going for a walk, which, when I thought about the film objectively, isn’t that far off the mark. So I don’t think we’ll be watching the others in a hurry, have to look for something else for next week.

There were lots of suggestions in the comments and on twitter for ideas last week, but no one linked up their own film night. Just in case anyone fancies it this week, I’ll stick the linky in again.

  1. I’ve also not read The Hobbit, etc. as I can’t read a book where the main character isn’t human (or near human). I thought the films would be a good option to gain some knowledge about such a big cultural icon, without spending loads of time on it. But maybe not….

  2. Aprilia enjoyed the trilogy but she had listened to The Hobbit first which I think helped rather a lot. I’m not sure they really work as films if you don’t know at least some of the story behind it (bit like the Harry films don’t really make sense if you don’t know the stories)

  3. Persuade him to try the princess bride. The boy being read to didn’t like the sound of it at first. It’s not as pappy as the title suggests.

I’ve never seen any LOTR, nor have I had any desire to. I do love this quote though..
“Basically three hours of ppl going for a walk” – made me giggle! You could give Barry Norman a run for his money!

  5. lol! i enjoyed lotr for a number of reasons, but amongst them is that i loved the book. i loved it so much i set fire to my bed by reading it under the blankets after lights out aged approx 10. and then i tried to rewrite it after it had been confiscated following said bed problem [parents have no sense of proportion!].
voyage of the dreamtreader was good tho!

    1. ROFL HH!!! you must be wearing really well if you are old enough to have had to read by candle light (ducks and runs….)

  6. harrumph!!! 🙂 nah, it was a desklamp, but the bulb protruded, so gradually sizzled a hole through bedding and mattress without me really noticing
