the eighth result

Now, how long is it going to be before I join the select crew of Wizard Whimstaff results in google? 😀

Tim took Big out today, and they went to wilkos and bought Wizard Whimstaff’s Hilarious Handwriting (aka Basic Skills: Handwriting: Ages 6-7 (Basic Skills)) and his Toady Times Tables: Magical Skills Level 1 (Magical Skills). Big is thrilled, and even more so with the fountain pen they picked up in the Works as well. (So much for planning to get her one for Christmas then!) She’s worked on and off at it for a good hour I would guess, although she can’t work for very long before it starts to hurt her finger a little. I *think* that’s just because she’s unaccustomed to a metal pen, but I’m going to keep an eye on it.

So that would be basic skills in handwriting and maths well underway then. Along with the fact that it’s Sunday again, so she got more practise in counting out her pocket money 🙂

Small has just very happily done a couple of pages of a Schofield and Sims book I’ve had hanging around since that coop order years ago (knew they’d come in handy one day!) and Big is currently on the computer again. Small has also worked hard at his self imposed task to memorise all numberjacks programmes 🙄 and is busy narrating a story where his Aunty Jilly is coming to get him to take him shopping? No, I don’t know what has fired that one off either.

I have been virtuous and cleared out a couple of square feet of dining room. A corresponding amount of bin is now full 🙁 I think I hate mice. At this rate we should be ready to move about 2009!

Yesterday afternoon was more pleasant. Barbara rang on Friday night telling me that she had visitors she thought we might like to see, so we went over to spend the afternoon with rainedrops and beans. Small wowed the audience by displaying his new found montessori skills of getting something out, playing with it, and then *putting it away*! I think all small children and probably most adults could do with a couple of years of montessori training – I know I certainly could 😉 I got to sit and chat and crochet while drinking lots of cups of tea, and then Chris R (rather than F for those who might be misled) served up a rather wonderful vegetarian meal of baked stuffed squash. This was after the children had feasted on pasta and cheese and vegetable crumble.

It was a very relaxing afternoon – I even got to ask Helen a couple of those questions left unanswered by the hospital after my recent miscarriage – and yes I took your advice Helen, and no it’s not that. 🙂 Helen also warned me it could be three months before I’m back to my old self – jolly dee. 🙁

[An aside, you know the oven warms up so much faster if you turn it on as well as turning the fan on!]

Other happenings today have included a long sesh with the John Adams Optical Science kit – for a long time after I bought that I regretted it as it just sat untouched on a shelf, but now it gets played with regularly, and has proved itself to be really good value. I managed to get two loads of washing done, and even hung one of them outside (where it then got rained on!) although the second one is currently sitting damply in the basket in the kitchen 😳 The fence at the front of the house blew down – looks like it’s bonfire time then. tbh, it will probably look better out there without it, and it will certainly make maintaining the grass down the side a lot easier. Does mean we aren’t going to be able to shut the gate though, so we’ll probably take that down too.

Big has read, and is beginning to see the reading practise pay off, her fluency has increased markedly. I still get a token protest from her when I ask her to do it, but it is pretty much a token. I suspect I’ll get no protest over handwriting practise for a little while 😉

It’s been a good weekend. And the joy of it all is that I’m off work tomorrow as well, so it isn’t over yet 😀

  1. Jax, you’re already on it-twice! This is making me want to go and get WW myself- especially if they’re selling it at Wilco’s 😉
Well done Small on putting things away. Mind you, in this house he best person at doing this has never been to a Montessori School (but perhaps my efforts have finally paid off!)

  2. re WW – You’re kidding me! That’s scary. Oh, and it’s 2.97 at Wilko’s 🙂
Small is by far the best person at putting things away. Although he’s much better in other ppl’s homes than here 😕

  3. giggle, it’s my post about results, which now comes third in the results 😉 and also one of the comments. Number of results for it has risen markedly – seem to recall there were less than 20 when I did it yesterday? We’re now up to 83.

  4. My lot all went through stages when they liked putting things away, and stages when they didn’t. Was very interesting to try and work out whether it was a common development process thing. I still don’t know!

  5. I think a fountain pen is a very grown up thing to attempt to write with – haven’t thought about getting any of mine one yet (they write with those Berol handwriting pens), good idea for Christmas though, thanks!

  6. Tim got her a couple of the berols as well, but she’s far more interested in the fountain pen. It was Barbara said she got one for E last year that made me think of it. this was the one that really appealed to me for her iyswim, but the ones she’s got is just a black one 🙂

  7. The Works are selling the plain black Parker Vector for £2.99, the Vector Decor is £7.49 and is the same pen. It is a nice pen to use, so i think it is exceptional value for money.

great seeing you Jax. you must have finished the shawl now surely?

  9. Nope, haven’t done any more on it actually – have been working overtime again 🙁
Started another motif last night – have three more to do including that, and then the edging. Think I’m still on track, though may be struggling to squeeze in the other bits I want to do 🙁
