some more of that making

You may recall a few weeks ago that I was pondering making a few things. So far I’ve made a hat, out of really rather gorgeous wool, as I said I’d started a little while back. Today Big and I branched out into the wired bead crochet. Well, OK, the first one I did was with thread and pony beads, and it’s surprisingly effective. So then I did one with wire and small beads.

Here’s a closeup of the wire stitches.

It’s a bit fiddly to do, and slightly painful on the fingers, but very rewarding. I think I need to find a good source of beads, and I’ve got Christmas pretty well nailed 🙂

Then I had a go with Big. This was even more testing! She really has a very short attention span, and had already decided she couldn’t do it before she started, so it took a lot of encouragement and several untangling sessions to get her through just the first row. But we persevered and got there in the end, and this is destined to be a present for a party we are unexpectedly going to tomorrow.

So I feel like we’ve had some concentrated time together today – quite impressing considering that I didn’t crawl out of my pit til lunchtime 😳 They also managed to fit in some painting, which is always good mummy points 😉

Small is still quite sorry for himself, I’m hoping he’s going to be OK for the party. It’s a fair hike up the road – one of Big’s classmates from school. Apparently the invites were dished out at the beginning of the week – but Big kept forgetting to bring it home, and I had to ring in yesterday to get someone to find it and read it to me over the phone after she came downstairs in tears on Thurs evening about it! 🙄

Right, Tim is chasing the small ppl into bed, so I’d better excavate the floor and the kitchen so that he can be comfortable when he comes down. And I’ve still got the washing to distribute around the bathroom – but that will have to wait til the crashing about has stopped.

  1. Ah, me and Maddy had a making day today, it was lovely 🙂 Like the wire stuff 🙂

  2. Oh, that’s come out really well 🙂 Do you have to use your fingers, or could you use a little pair of wire benders (not sure of technical name!)?

“Decorative knitted looping technique with a special needle. Often made in to shawls and blankets, made popular by the 1960s hippie movement.” Thought you of all people would have known that. 🙂

There, two people insulted in one comment. A good day’s work. LOL

  4. They look lovely 🙂

  5. Oi, blokey!
Alison, I just use a normal crochet hook or two – although I made sure I used metal ones as apparently plastic or bamboo would get a bit beaten up. So I did the first round with quite a chunky one, and then used a much smaller one for the second round.
It’s pretty narrow gauge wire, I got 28 as 26, which was recommended, looked kind of chunky.

  6. Oops, I forgot it was crochet! I read the painful fingers bit and drifted off.
I must be slow atm though, I’m sitting here wondering if you just called me a hippy … I’ll take that as a compliment rather than an insult though, I think 🙂

  7. And btw, do we get a picture of the hat?

  8. he called us both hippies.
Yes, I’ll have to get a piccie of the hat. I’ve got a request from someone at work to make her one too 🙂

  9. You are both hippies. :ozzie: :hippy:

  10. Well, you *are* a hippy Jax 😉
I’ve been wondering about trying to look more like a grown-up, now we’re almost into the second half … trouble is, *no one* dreses like a grown-up any more!
