Small and reading.

Have just tested Small’s reading level here He didn’t miss much until he got into the square with image, and then didn’t hit anything after that, giving him a score of 56, which is a reading level of 5.6, which is US age 10 – 11. It’s slightly higher than I would have assessed him, but not a lot, having seen the sort of thing he’s now reading, and he could well be capable of reading more than I’ve seen him read iyswim and all pretty much without any help, although he did use Stile trays at school.

Not that I’m sure I could have done much more to help tbh. I’m considering getting the Stile numeracy stuff in as he’s hugely resistent to being taught, but he does like Stile, so if I get that and put it on a shelf he might use it at some point. He is an interesting child.

  1. Oh that was interesting; just tried it on Maddy and she got to half way through the square before he did, so that makes her roughly a year ahead of her school year, which is encouraging 🙂

  2. that was interesting, got the girls to do it and they both got to the 72 box without problems, then couldn’t do the next box very comfortably at all. We all found it interesting though!

  3. Although we’ve just picked through the last boxes and silent ps and mn were no problem, and R read soliloquize no problems!

  4. Ooh, I’ll give Jess a go with that when she’s finished lunch.
    Well done, Small!

  5. Jess came out at 49, so 9-10, though I would have put her at about 8.
I might try her on the Burt Reading Test (which I remember doing in school) as that’s probably a bit more in tune with the UK levels.
With Jess I think at the moment her ability exceeds her confidence, partly through being only given very simple readers at school. The house is littered with books though, so I don’t think that will be a problem for long…
