Runes of Battle by G.N. Gudgion

Adelais is on the run.

And the kingdom of Galmandie has never been more dangerous.

In every town square, people whisper of a girl who brought down lightning on her enemies. The king has placed a huge price on Adelais’s head and sent troops to hunt her down.

Adelais flees high into the mountains. But winter is closing in and she cannot hide for ever.

Far to the north, there is a chance of escape. Her homeland has risen in rebellion against Galmandie. To reach freedom and safety, Adelais must cross many miles of hostile territory with inquisitors and royal soldiers always close behind.

If she is captured, Adelais will be burned as a witch. But if she learns to control the storm of magic within her, she could be the spark that sets the whole country aflame.

Packed with intrigue, action and warring gods, The Rune Song Trilogy is perfect for fans of Robin Hobb, Mark Lawrence and Andrzej Sapkowski.

I’ve really enjoyed getting back into reading recently, and along with that, it’s great to get back into book blogging. I adore a bit of fantasy – Robin Hobb, Robin McKinley, Mercedes Lackey are all well represented on my book shelves, and I’m happy to give new (to me) writers a go. This series is shaping up really well – what I particularly like in a fantasy book is a coherent and plausible society and magical system, and the world building in this series is excellent on both those grounds.

Once you’ve got the world rules set up, of course what you need next is characters and a strong plot, and Geoff (may I call you Geoff?) has that in abundance as well. The story moves along quickly, but not so quickly that there’s no room for character development, and so the characters are well drawn and fleshed out. I confess I haven’t quite finished the second book, given that I was playing catch up on the first, but I’m going along at a good pace, always a good sign, and if you’re a fantasy reader, particularly fans of the authors mentioned above, looking for a new writer to get into, these books will do you well.

I don’t like to include spoilers, but I will say that there are some darker, or perhaps brutal is an apposite word, aspects to the story, so if you prefer your fantasy cosy, these titles might not be for you.
