Rites of passage: the first slide

I don’t remember the first time I took any of the older children to play at a playground. In the days before digital cameras I didn’t take pictures all the time, and there’s no note against anything on the blog saying first time on a slide for Small or Smallest.

Which is a little sad.

And knowing that yesterday was one of many last firsts made me a little sad too. Each first that Tigerboy has is the last time I’ll experience that first for a child – we’re moving out of his babyhood, and I’m putting away those baby things. I took a bag of things to the charity shop yesterday and felt a real pang at handing over the soft comforter bear that none of them actually liked (you know the ones, with the flat piece of cloth instead of a body? My children seem to react to them the same way Tim does, he calls them roadkill teddies :/ ).

Then last night we went to a playground. I don’t take the youngest two to playgrounds nearly as often as I should. Too busy being or doing other things – they go wherever we are going and get to do all sorts of things the older children never tried as they tag along after siblings, so I guess it all balances out. (You could even say it’s swings and roundabouts, couldn’t you? 😉 ) Turns out that Tigerboy loves slides. He loves climbing, and walking around, and sorting himself on to the slide and the bump as he shoots off the bottom.

Can’t believe I didn’t take a picture of that either – and I did have my phone in my pocket. Mummy fail.

You’ll have to make do with a picture of them both on the swings.

So, do me a favour. Cram as many of those firsts into your days, and your blogs as you can. You won’t regret it, having those to look back on. And make sure you take pictures.

Otherwise you will also be falling back on apologies to yourself, and fading memories. Of a day with first playground sliding, and first time we saw the ISS pass over (how very bright it is!) and the first time we slept in a tent inside.

A good day, yesterday, all round.
