Riding Tycho #100books

Book 5 for our 100 books challenge.

I picked this one up at the library a few weeks back. I think I’d seen the sequel somewhere and realised that it was a sequel, so looked for the first one and was lucky. I wish I’d grabbed the sequel at the same time as my complaint about this book is that it doesn’t finish the story, just leaves it hanging in mid air. And that is rather annoying when it’s such a riveting story.

This book is speculative fiction, which is a genre I’m rather partial too. Alternative societies, different ways of living, explorations of aspects of our society. Fascinating stuff. The story takes place on High Island, and the main characters Demetria, her family and Political 37250 aka Ianto Morgan are simply drawn but fascinating. I’d guess the book is actually aimed at teens, but certainly holds up to an adult read, albeit not a very long one. Can’t wait to get my hands on the sequel, Voyager. Think I’ll have to order it in at the library.

One comment though – if your teen or pre-teen is at all sensitive, they may not wish to read this book. The society on High Island is not a kind and gentle one, and women and children are hit by men and boys. It’s far from a utopia and I think that’s probably the point. But I won’t know for sure till I get to the sequel.

The boring small print…If you don’t want to miss out on any of the news on the challenge, please sign up to my rss feed – there’s an email link over in the side, or you can sub with a reader. I’m also on twitterusing the hashtag #100books and facebook.

If you want to donate, please feel free, there’s a link in the sidebar or you can use this one. If you’d like to join in with your own version of the challenge, please leave me a comment to let me know so that I can link to you. And also, the booklink above is an affiliate link, but it’s set up with its own tracking id, so anything bought via a 100 book challenge link is separate to those usually on my blog, and I’ll be donating that money through to Oxfam as well.

  1. Oh, I used to like Jan Mark, but haven’t read any of her recent stuff. Think I poked “The Ennead” in Violet’s direction recently. I shall look for her later books too 🙂
