Revisiting Valdemar – the Mage Winds by Mercedes Lackey

This rather lovely volume arrived through the post from Titan Books today.

Out March 20th, pre order The Mage Winds (A Valdemar Omnibus) at Amazon.

I’m not sure if you can tell, but it’s big. Over a thousand pages, and they’re pretty small print too. That’s a whole lot of reading.

The Valdemar books kept me company through the decade or so before I had children. In and out of relationships, in and out of jobs. I loved them – strong yet fallible characters, plenty of what would now be called strong female leads but at the time I just saw as girls kicking backside with style. It’s fantasy in the grand style – adventure, mythical beasts, Kings, Queens, sorcery, assassins, enchanted realms, the lot. I think this is actually the second trilogy, and that the first is also available via Titan Books (The Heralds of Valdemar Omnibus only £3.83 on Kindle! ) I was thrilled to see in the front of this one that there’s a whole series of titles I haven’t read as well, as well as more on the way.

I love Mercedes Lackey’s style – it’s very forthright. Lots of description, everything is very well fleshed out, but also huge amounts of action. Quite a bit of gore as well, in all sorts of interesting ways 😉 you’ll even find a fair bit of romance, and it’s not all girl faints into boy’s arms by a long stretch. In fact, if I recall correctly, there’s pretty much every variation on relationships possible, with all the possible messy understandings that can happen along the way happening too.

I’m wondering if Big will like them – certainly worth trying, as they tend to young lead characters, at least in the books I remember well. Might have to grab the first set first for her though – I used to have them all, but I don’t know where they’ve gone over the years. I’m really pleased to have them back though, and to be able to reacquaint myself with such a rich and varied world, and a whole lot of old friends.
