Small is continuing with his reading – he has been practising (probably without realising it) while reading his new Power Rangers Annual 2009: Operation Overdrive (Annual) (£1 from Tesco bargain. Although I wish I’d bought more copies of the Doctor Who ones that I picked up for step nephews, as they’d all gone by the time we popped in again.) He informed me this morning that one of the bad guys “can teleport!”. He is also doing the puzzles and so on in there, so there’s some (possibly) logical processing on.

Big was playing on the computer. I don’t know precisely what she plays on the computer, but she seems to enjoy it. Can I call that IT or something? No? Didn’t think so 😉 Anyway, I attempted to attract their attention and failed dismally until I reminded them that it’s Grandma’s birthday tomorrow and it would be good to make cards. At that point they became all industrious, and Big combined two of her new card sets to make a rather lovely card. (I do have pictures if I ever get around to setting up editing software on here).

By the time they’d done that, I was thinking that it was nearly lunchtime, and before I could suggest anything else to be done before lunch, they disappeared. Ah well. We did of course have to have a quick fall out over lunch preparations, but I recovered equilibrium eventually and we had another nice family meal.

After lunch Big and I had another mathematically based fallout, which is already becoming boring, and she announced that she doesn’t want to be home educated any more. Result! I thought that it would be much longer before we got to that state. 😀 🙄 Anyway, she recited the extra verses of twinkle twinkle that she’s now learnt, and then went on to copy out Bed in Summer in preparation for learning it. This led on to a discussion about punctuation and layout of poems (she doesn’t know anything about punctuation she says, as she didn’t do it at school, so I asked how she manages when she reads, and we came to an agreement that maybe she does know something about it after all) as well as how to recite them, which I thought was all quite good.

And now we’ve copied addresses onto envelopes so we need to embark on the search for socks and so on so that we can go out and post the cards. Small and I will need to do some work on spacing between words and lines, and then when we get back it’s time for more mathematical battles and some science that I’ve been promising all week and just hasn’t been happening somehow.

All of this when I feel like death only slightly warmed over, wow. I think that the activity level dropoff from not running up and down stairs all day is already having a price in that my period is much more painful this month 🙁 And I haven’t processed any washing today, or done anything kitchen related other than making lunch. Oh well.

  1. With maths, do you think it would help if you had something that she could just get on with by herself, that you didn’t have to be too involved with? Singapore MPH Pupil’s Books (not the Practice Books) have explanations and questions (and worked examples, and lots of ‘fill in the blanks’), and I do like being able to say “read the book again and you’ll find out” 😀
I’ve not used Miquon, but doesn’t that have that sort of idea behind it? Encouraging them to be independent problem solvers?

  2. We had several breakthroughs this afternoon that I’m hopeful might make maths a little less unpleasant in the future. My experience is even if I get books for her, she wants me to sit right by her side and metaphorically hold her hand. He’s much the same, so I appear to be spending a lot of time sitting next to children doing maths. Today I sat there doing my maths, so it was quite companionable 🙂

  3. If you’d like to try some MPH Pupil’s books we have most of them, almost unused.

  4. Sitting together working sounds ideal 🙂

  5. would like to take a look Jan, next time we meet up perhaps?

  6. I always have to sit with Jade too – she is convinced she can’t do it and will need help at every step, but in fact she can.
