Read52 with something a little bit different from Barefoot Books.

A reading challenge from https://liveotherwise.co.uk

This week I’ve already read and reviewed a book – the 5th Wave by Rick Yancey. And while I’ve done reading with the children, I don’t have anything specific to talk about that we’ve read.

So instead I’m going to pad this post out with a picture of a cute owl.

owl

Isn’t he cute? I got him from barefoot books, they were giving away a free voucher if you filled in a survey. I think that offer is over now, but they seem to regularly have a variety of offers, and their books are utterly gorgeous. In fact, I’m pondering signing up as an ambassador, but the initial layout of £60 is a bit offputting. Anyone out there done it and got experience to share? Or would any of you consider buying via me?

Anyway, there was a mixup on the order and they sent me two owls! Which means, you lucky lucky people, that one of you is in line to win your very own cute owl finger puppet. How can you resist?

All you need to do to be entered is tell me your favourite book about animals. Picture book, novel, encyclopaedia, I don’t mind, just let me know what it is in a comment.

The competition closes next Thursday 11th April at midnight so that I can announce the winner next Friday. And you can have an extra entry for sharing this post, using the badge or joining the linky with your own Read52 post – but you must leave an extra comment for each thing you’ve done, telling me what it is. As I’m doing the posting, I’m afraid it’s only open to UK – but if you’re international and happy to arrange to have it posted on you can do that – I’m only sending to a UK address. Draw will be made using the lovely plugin and the winner is, which relies on separate comment entries.

The background: I’ve challenged Big to read 52 books this year. She will probably be mentioning them over here on her blog. I’m also going to have a crack at reading at least 52 books myself, and more importantly, I’m going to keep track of what books I’m reading to the little ones. I’m going to do all of that in a weekly post, and I’ve also set up a google plus community which you’re very welcome to join. (If you need an invitation, leave me a comment using relevant email address – which will stay hidden.)

disclosure: Book links are, wherever possible, affiliate links.

Last week’s winner was Beth. Congrats Beth 🙂

Mine’s the wonderful The Rebels of Journey’s End by Diana Frances Bell, who was only sonething like 15 when she wrote it. It was published by Puffin in the late 60s or early 70s and is about a group of animals who try to escape their unjust lives as pets. They do have one human ally. It’s very funny, perceptive, moving and political!

  2. Since the prize is an owl I’ll go with an owl story – Owl Moon by Jane Yolen. Its a great picture book about a little girl who goes out owling with her dad . The warmth of the relationship ozzes out of the story – lovely! Anna is owl crazy so we have a fair selection of owl books – could also recommend Owl Babies by Martin Waddell (picture book) and The Owl who was afraid of the dark by Jill Tomlinson (chapter book).

    1. should have said oozes!

  3. I linked to FB too!

  4. Aaaarrgh! You reminded me that I have a voucher to use too, so thank you!
There are so many wonderful books on animals and it is very hard to choose just one! As a child, amongst my favourite books were two Ladybird ones: “Garden Birds” and “British Wild Animals” (or some such). Since moving I don’t know where they’ve gone and I’m very, very sad about it (I’ve had them since I was a little girl) 🙁

  5. My favourite childhood book with animals has to be Watership Down by Richard Adams, so full of adventure and so sad too. as an Adult I love the book Fluke by the recently deceased James Herbert. A Man coming back as a Dog trying to get people to understand what he’s come back for. 🙂

  6. I came across your website! And I’m going to have a good look around it!
I’m an ambassador myself and I love it! I’m based in West London and I highly recommend the Barefoot books Company. It’s a flexible job. You do whatever you want to do with it, selling books of course but you can also use the books and the brand to organize storytelling, books club, birthday parties… The books are gorgeous of course and I love the fact that they promote other cultures. Not to mention the green ethos!
The fees are reduced this month and don’t forget that the starter kit is basically a box full of books that worth £200! Don’t hesitate to contact me if you want more info! I will tweet your lovely giveaway.
