Questseekers presentation.

Sunday was our questseekers presentation. The libraries we’ve used before haven’t done presentations, they’ve just given out the certificate once the children have read the six books, so I was quite keen to go along and experience this. Even got up early so that we could be sure to be ready, so as usual, was yelling for children to get themselves organised a couple of minutes after the time I wanted to leave 🙁

Got there on time though, and there were lots of ppl crammed into the minimal open space, including WFHelen, so it was nice to see her :). Only other child I recognised was from Small’s beavers, but his parents were too far away to say hi to.

Given that there were probably going on for a hundred children there, right down to babes in arms, it made so much sense for the presenters to waffle on and on and then to start the session by singing several of the bookstart songs. Sigh. Particularly enjoyed it when they did heads, shoulders, knees and toes – how no child concussed any other child I do not know. Then the bookstart babies got their certificates – was very impressed with the volunteer? librarian? who knew every single name and knew whether they were there or not.

And on to the older children. They each got a certificate and a medal, and the whole thing took nearly an hour. Was very impressed with Small sitting quietly on the floor in the crowd – he was rocking backwards and forwards for some of the time, but his behaviour was better than the majority of small boys there tbh. Was less than impressed when they got to the end and they hadn’t got his certificate 🙁 I was moving forward as soon as they started to do their closing bit, and I interrupted them to say they weren’t finished, and I think that’s why we didn’t end up with a tantrum, because I was already dealing with it before he realised, but I was still hugely unimpressed. I know he finished it pretty much on the deadline, but he did finish and given that they’d rung us to remind us when he could finish by I think they could have done better than that. There was another little girl left out as well, she too looked rather upset.

But he got his certificate and his medal and a little cardboard questseekers game as an apology for missing him out. Not that the bloke who’d been doing the presentations actually involved himself in this at all, he was too busy watching the magician, which I also thought was poor – he could so easily have got involved. Made it obvious he was really there for the photo op and just going through the motions, not really interested in the children at all.

After that we headed back for Tim to pick up his brother for their Sunday outing and discovered that cousin L was back for a pit stop in between Thailand (holiday) and Montreal (work). She’d brought them presents as well, and we got to see how the extension is coming on (it’s got walls, and a floor and holes where the windows will go!) and chat for a bit too. Then home for a quiet afternoon and family dinner laid on courtesy of the coop reduced section 🙂

  2. our library didn’t have a presentation day, and after reading about your experince I’m jolly glad they didn’t! 100+ people in a small space for several hours with not-really-present people in charge = my idea of hell! Small did an awesome job of sitting nicely and behaving well – far better than I ever would have done!
