Pokemon for parents: Shiny Charizard distribution.

Last night, Small reminded me that he’d told me about a free Pokemon distribution taking place at Game stores across the country, and that I’d promised to take him to get a code.

(I’m assuming that anyone arriving here knows about Pokemon – but possibly not distributions? Basically, this is a chance to get a special Pokemon that you can’t otherwise get in the game. You get a code either online, or by going into a shop as we did today, and then you redeem it in the game. Instructions are included 🙂 )

So, this meant that this morning, instead of having my Sunday morning lie in, I had my alarm set to get me up for a quick trip to the next town. Tigerboy had other plans, and we were up a good couple of hours before I needed to drag Small up, meaning I was in great form by the time we were finally on our way.

However, it’s kind of rare that I spend time just one to one with Small, so I decided to make the best of it. I did point out to him that if he’d reminded me before the night before he thought the whole thing was over we could have planned properly and made a trip out of it. As it was, rushing to get there as soon as the shop opened meant we arrived in a quiet town, and could take a little time to walk and talk.

I don’t really get the Pokemon thing. Small knows that there are 719 Pokemon, which ones are in which games, can list their characteristics, evolutions and so on. Smallest is learning from him too, and knows an impressive amount. He wanted the Shiny Charizard, not because of it, but because he hoped to trade it for a Pokemon he prefers – it turns out you can’t trade special Pokemon. He decided that didn’t upset him too much, as with it being shiny, and also having something or other that lets it mega evolve, it’s pretty useful in battles.

Along with the code, he got a book for the trading card game. We haven’t really got into that either, but I can see that it could become a must have. (I’ve carefully stayed away from that kind of behaviour with all the kids, can you imagine having multiple children all having to have *all* of a set of anything? Lets not go there.)

One thing I did pick up for him in Game though was an accessories pack, including a hard case for his 3DS XL, which at 4.99 was a bit of a bargain. Styluses are the things that cause us the most pain – his black one is currently MIA thanks to Tigerboy, so getting a set which has two seemed like a pretty good investment. (And I think we now spot Game’s strategy in being involved in these free distributions 😉 )

I’m hoping to persuade Small to write more on distributions and so on on his fledgling Pokemon site, but I can’t persuade him that people would be interested in it. So if you would, or know a child who would, could you leave me a comment or ping me on twitter so that I can show him? Cheers.
